This is prolly NO HELP, I am not a mechanic, but...

I had a 79 Chevy Nova when I was 17. It ran rich (you could smell fuel in the exhaust), and idled like crap, but once in gear and on the road it was fine. A mecanic friend told me it was prolly timing or a bad distributor. I didn't have a timing light, and didnt want to pay to have it checked, so I just had a distributor put in and timed and the problem was gone.

Dunno, maybe?
