1985 ranger ...i cant figure it out
this is my 85 ranger in my signature
lately it has been running crappy on some occasions and (after me doing a lil hard driving as in quick acceleration just after starting it )...i will go 45-50 down this road coming home from work and then come up to a stop light and it will be chugging like an old farm tractor and want to stall...i will have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running ...this could go on at the next 1 4 or maybe no stoplights after that ...it doesnt seem to smoke or anything as if the choke is sticking ,but i dont know anything for sure ...the plugs and wires are not that old maybe a few months but then i didnt have the few xtra bucks for a cap androtor so i changed those yesterday...made sure the cap and rotor were tight and all wires went to the correct points on the sitributor ...still doing the same thing ...i am getting terrible gas mileage...as in i can only get my tank to take 9.5-10.5 gals when my gas guage is below e and on that fill up i normally get about 70-86 miles...my friend suggested that the carb is dumping too much gas and i dont know a float from a ar cleaner when it comes to carbs...i dont know anything of how the adjustments are set now for air fuel or how they should be and i wont mess with em...friend also suggested a vaccum leak...which leans out the mix causing the carb to want to dump too much gas...i checked all my vaccum lines for cracks or loose ends and no probs thsat i see there as far as the gaskets at the base of the carb...i did this thing that my auto tech teacher said...dont try this at home about ...as in holding a propane torch UNLIT and moving it along all gaskets and if the idle changed that would locate a vaccum leak at the gaskets...no change in idle during this ....so i now stand hoping i can get some help here with a big question mark above my head...

i had a problem with my 86 V6 ranger years ago that was similar.
There was a sensor that went for a poop. I cant remember exactly what this was or its name but basically it was the sensor that monitored/measured unspent fuel.
When it finally stopped doing its job it forced the fuel pump to run at 150% and flooded the engine with 1/2 tank of gas in 5 mins...
screwed up the fuel pump and clogged the cat conv.

I am not sure but you might want to check the oxygen sensor and i think it should also have a Sensor for monitoring the gas as well i think it is called a (map sensor) not sure it that is the correct word for that. I had an 86 ranger 2.9 and before i owned it ford had rebuilt the engine. by the time i traded it in it had about 150,000 and was starting to run like crap. hope this is of some help.
