Grille Removal
Well I've been reading in the Lightning forum too much. I have a GREY grille and all the other trim pieces are BLACK. SO I wanna take it off and paint it BLACK. How would I go about removing it?

ccla,
I'll be looking into that myself, I want to mount a couple fog lamps behind my grill and it sure would be easier if the grill was removed! Check the bottom of the bar that runs across the lower portion of the grill, it looks as if there are two clips that lead to the back of the grill. I haven't got behind the grill yet to see what else may be holding it on. but those two clips are visable looking through the grill. Good luck and keep us posted!

I have never removed my grille so I cannot answer all of your questions, but I was going to paint my grille this past summer so I posted this exact question a while back. Here is a condensed version of the answers I got.
The grille is held into the plastic surround with 16 clips, 9 on the top and 7 on the bottom. I have seen the clips before so that at least is true. On 99-00 models you remove a black tab per clip then the grille can be removed and reinstalled later. However on 97-98 models the plastic surround is melted and bent around to hold the grille in place. Therefore removal of the grille usually results in breaking these tabs off, making reinstall much more difficult.

I replaced mine with a 4x4 grill (now im monochrome, all painted bumbers and grills) there are clips on the top, and two weird clips in the middle, but you have take the headlights off, and you will see 2 screws, take those out and the grill will just pull off

ccla,
If you like, post your e-mail address and I'll get in touch with some directions (plus details on how easy it is to do as I have a billet grill I'm putting in this weekend) The grill came with instructions on how to remove the original. I'd be glad to scan 'em in and send to you. Note that Freezer is correct in that you have to break stuff to remove ....which sucks. You might just want to mask off and paint it on the truck...bumper black would work well I think. Hey, if you screw up yours painting it on the truck, I'd be glad to sell you my old one for a very nominal price (e.g a cold twelve pack). I'll be very careful in my removal just in case. I've got the directions for the body lift too if you're feeling realllyy industrious......

new advice...leave it on the truck and paint it....removal was a pain....the grey middle piece was molded into mine and I had to cut out with a jigsaw..suffice to say there is no going back...but the billet looks good...but was it a pain..the directions weren't so clear ..but I shade tree'd it in...good luck

Sorry for butting into this "L" forum, but I been reading all these ways how to paint the front grill.
I left mine in, taped it off and painted with satin black trim paint, can't tell that it was or wasn;t taken out to be painted..saves alot of headaches.
Also painted the lower valance with trim paint too, now everything matches.

Rustoleum offers a black metallic paint. I taped off the ugly silver center and fizz canned this on, several coats, then a couple coats of clear coat. Makes it look like a 2000 grill, just a shines little more. Holding up pretty good so far (3 months), but got a couple of rock chips, should be easy enough to touch up.

I know that this is off topic a bit, but I would like to know if the honeycomb grilles can be bought cheaper than for what dealerships want. I asked mine, and the price for the grill was too expensive. Is this simply to have name ford on the grill itself? or are all grilles gonna cost the same?
