Question painting question

Hello all; I'm painting my (plastic) t.b. cover and it's turning out great, but... my question is this: I am spraying the color coat, and when it dries, I had planned to apply a clear coat. After reading the back of the can, (color) it states "Do not apply wax, surface sealants, or clear top coats" What gives? I thought a clear coat would give it a nice deep wet look.....can I blow off the can recommendation? What are your thoughts. Thank's for your help.
Scott
