Angry ROOF CRACK

Checked my doors, no crack...Yet.Unfortunately I was waxing the roof and found two cracks in the depressed areas running front to back. One of the cracks is about the length of the depression. The other is about 4 inches long. They are at the edges where the metal turns up to meet the regular roof line.

Race: If you're refering to the rain channels on the roof, then I too have the cracks running in the paint. Both sides too. I used a tube of clear sealent (liquid nail) down both sides. Put this on about 2 weeks ago. I now have to be careful waxing these areas but who's gonna look up there anyway?? Also unless I get on a ladder and almost put my nose in the channels, I can't see the sealent. This worked for me. If you still have warrenty, take it to Ford and see what they suggest.

Looks like I have the same problem also. I believe the roof channels are filled with some type of filler from the factory. A magnet will not stick inside these channels.Windstar roof channels are made the same way.

I am glad to know about the magnet test, in my despair, wondering if I should crash it, and let insurance buy me a new one, I failed to check to see if it was actually metal. I was just wondering if it was just me that had the problem. Its still under warranty, but I felt that it could be something of concern!

Check out the discussion entitled "Cracked Paint on roof of '97 F150" also under "Other body". The last post was April99, so you'll have to set the "show topics from.." control properly, or you could just follow this link:

Anyway, there is a lot of interesting posts there about the roof cracks. My truck has them also, but I haven't done anything about them yet. They don't seem to have gotten worse (yet).

I don't think all trucks will get roof cracks.

Seems to me it could only be caused by bad shocks and a hard head.

I just found the same type of crack today while washing the truck. It runs the whole length of the drivers side roof channel. Man, that really tick me off. I will call the dealer as soon as I get back from my trip to Arkansas this week to have it fixed.

Same thing with my 98 super cab. I can't believe this is normal..but like Tina said..not many people will ever notice it. However, it still is not right and should be fixed by FORD! It seems like a bunch of people are having this problem.

Is this a metal crack or just a paint crack?

It is a paint crack. It could be easily fixed..but this should not happen on a one year old vehicle.

I have had cracks down both water channels on both sides of each channel when the truck was less than a year old. I will have that fixed at the same time they fix the door crack.

I have the same problem on my truck which has only 3800 miles on it!

Has anyone gotten a response or fix from Ford yet?

I spoke to my service department about it and they recommended that I, yes, I use some compound on the area and it would come right off. But guess what, that doesn't work, and further more, why should I have to do anything to my new truck?

I have cracks in my roof too! but it is no concern to me! because they use flexible seam
and joint sealer on them and what you are seeing is were the joints flex it causes small hairline cracks to form in the paint if
they would have used a flex additive in the
paint it would not have cracked like that!
but my doors has cracks on both sides that is
a major concern and ford needs to fix that!
KEEP ON TRUCKIN!

I have cracked paint all over my truck. I have been through the ringer with Ford too. It may start in the gutter wells on your roof's but WATCH EVERYWHERE ELSE TOO! I have these tiny hairline fractures all over the rest of my truck too. I didn't notice them until I was waxing my truck a couple of weeks ago. I am on a rampage and I am tired of Ford making excuses (acid rain). I live in a state where we don't have rain. Why are all of you accepting "it's normal" as an answer? It's not normal. Would it be normal if the roof on your brand new homes cracked?
