Painting a Bug Shield
I was wondering if anyone has painted their bug sheild to match their truck? I have a new clear bug shield that I want to paint and was wondering what the process would be?
I painted mine white and all i did was just said it down a little bit and then spray the paint on... It was really easy... I havent put it back yet because i think i might spray some gloss on there... It looks really good though, it matches almost perfect...
I did the same thing to one I had on my Ranger. I painted the inside of it so that it wouldn't chip as easily. Painting a coat of clear would help as well. For my F150 I bought one that was color-matched. Much easier and I think it will hold up a lot better.
If its clear......you definately want to paint the back of it ( be surprised, I've seen them paint the front). Mask off the whole front of the bug shield with tape and paper. Clean the back with a degreaser or something to remove the oil left by fingers and stuff, use 1000 grit sand paper and lightly scuff the entire bug shield. Clean again. Buy and high quality matching color paint, apply with 3-4 light coats. YOUR DONE.

Here's a post i really can help out on.
I used to paint for a Ford dealer. I did at least 50 bug shields. You paint the back side. If you paint the front, why put one on. It will stone chip just like the hood would.
Tape the front, including the edges so it looks neat. I used to wipe them down with alcohol cleaner and spray base coat on/in.
Just base. The plastic itself acts as the clear or shine as you look through it from the front. Thats it. Just base coat.
Be carefull. Metallic colors will mottle if you spray it on to heavy. Remember, any mistake on the first coat or two will be seen forever, so several light coats.
Just wipe off your fingerprints. DO NOT SAND THE PLASTIC.
I called Dee Zee's tech line when i first started doing them to find out if i was doing them right. They said i was ok other than they wish i would'nt wipe them down with alcohol cleaner. They said paint them bare if possible. No chemicals. But you really need to wipe off your fingerprints and whatever else may be on there.
