Fog Lights

I'm lookin to put in some fog lights on my truck. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions as to what brand and color light would look best. Also, if anyone could explain the wiring that would be great. I want to do it exactly like the instructions in the Technical Articles so they come on with the parking lights but I'm far from an electrician. Any help with be greatly appreciated.

I went to pep boys and just got some of their small oval hallogen lights. They are alright but I have had to replace about 3 bulbs in a year. I think they were pilot brand. I hooked mine up so that I could turn them on in the day time. I kinda makes it stand out against everything else. If you just want to hook into the parking lights you can just splice into one of the wires. You should put a fuse in case it tries to draw to much current. The wires are pretty big and should be able to handle it. However if you want to do it the right way, you would hook up a wire that goes to a relay. You would then have a wire going to the battery for power so that when the relay gets power from the parking lights it will pull power off the battery. I hooked mine up so that when I turn the key they will come on. I also have a switch so I can turn them off. I hooked up the relay to the antenna lead from the radio, then to a switch, then to the relay. when the radio comes on, it turns the relay on and then the lights draw power from the battery. Its pretty easy to do, it just takes awhile running the wires and getting everything secured. BTW, i have a '98 and i put them in the long hole that is in my bumper. They have to be pretty small though. I think they look really good personally. Good luck!

In my experience, the only lights you should consider are
Hella and PiAA. They both built a very attractive, functional light that will last forever and come with a simple yet sturdy wiring harness. You'll be amazed at how simple the install is with their wiring harsesses.

If you want fog lights make sure you get the fog lense not the driving light lense. Color will not have much of an effect on the performance. Mostly just a matter of taste but yellow lenses are more conspicuous in heavy fog if that's an issue.

With your truck I think you really need a billit grill. It would look very nice and you could then install the fog lights behind it and no one would even know you have them unless they're turned on. Plus fog lights are most functional when they're mounted just about the same height as the headlamps but make sure they are aimed properly so you don't blind anyone.

The Piaa 520's would fit well behind the grill and for PiAA's they are not all that pricey. When you consider PiAA and Hella, Hella's cost about 1/2 as much as PiAA for the same lights.

You could also mount smaller lights on either side of the licence plate in the bumper opening but I'd personally save that space for some driving lights.

When you purchase a set of lights they will have instructions for wiring them and it really is not very difficult. It is best to wire them to come on with your parking lots or headlights rather than having the option of having power to them at all times because you absolutely will one day forget to turn the off if they draw power from a constat source.

I have my light wired into the battery fuse box on the passenger side engine compartment. Very simple and you cannot even see any extra wires inside my engine compartment.

***If you do have any specific problems when you are wiring in the lights just post another message***
