Question Disassemble Mirrors?

I'd like to know if the mirror covers are hard to remove . My electric mirrors work somedays and not others.

If it's not too difficult I would like to remove them so I can lube the cables and other moving parts in there. Any suggestions on what type of lube to use?

Thanx in advance.

Post mirrors...

If you have electric mirrors, there are no cables or anything else to lube inside them. There are two little electric motors that basically turn "screws" to move the glass up/down, and in/out. Lubing probably won't do you much good on the little motors, but it might. You might have corroded terminals on the motor connection, or the motors might just be going bad, they aren't much of a motor.

Removing the outer chrome or painted covers will not let you see anything at all that has to do with the inner workings of the mirror. To get to the motors you will need to pop the glass off which is a bit dicey to say the least. It is very easy to break off the two little ball tabs that hold the mirror to the body opposite each motor screw - i broke mine, so I know.

You can get the outer cover off without too much trouble though, there are just small pop tabs that you have to remove with a long, small screwdriver behind the glass. Just move the glass to each of it's extreme movements and shine a light in and you will see the push tabs I am talking about. The one closest to the window is much easier if you roll the window down so you can see inside better. Like I said before, this won't help anything, but it is how you do it.

Hope this helpls a little. Just my 2 pennies worth!

Tirenut -

You said you broke the pegs that hold your mirror to the housing, which I have done also. Did you have to buy the whole side mirror assembly or just the mirror on the black plastic backing? I was told that if you lost or broke the white plastic pegs that you had to buy the whole assembly. Also, if you did replace the whole thing, did you do it yourself? Thanks for any help!

Buttercheese,
I bought the entire mirrow assembly, but I got it from the f150online classifieds for way cheaper than my dealer wanted. I was told the same story. Check fordpartsonline. They might have sometihng.
