Question Leak thru 3rd brake light, how to remove brake light?

On my 1997, F150 ext.cab, I seem to have a leak through the 3rd brake light (an hopefully not the rear window). My rear window has a slider. I just bought the truck, so I have no experience working on it (but I worked on all my previous cars in the past).

While I have found a lot of hints and advice how to fix a leak in the rear window, I have found no hints how to remove and reseal the 3rd brake light. I read that the gasket is not available separately but I will cut one myself or use silicone or else.

Any suggestions?

Andy

Two phillips head screws holding it on. Remove them and pull lens out. Probably will not fix your issue though. These are notorious for windows leaking. I am fixing my cousins '97 this weekend also.

It happened to me a few months ago. What you may not realize, hopefully it hasn't done this yet, is that the water that gets in will travel down the frame to the passenger side area to where the floor mats are and those long plastic step ups next to the carpet. (However I have an 06)....Either way, undue the light and add a good layer of silicone. When you put it back it will eventually dry into a rubberish water proof sealent. Extremely easy to do.

If your '97 still has the original slider, the window frame may be cracked, causing the leak.

My experience w/ putting a '97 slider in my '99 ... Slider Fail

If you can see the edge of the glass on your window (see pic below), you have the old type of slider.

I'm willing to bet it's the window leaking. The leak is probably dripping above youe head or passengers? It's just too common of problem on these rigs. Glass shops do it cheap I hear, I did it myself and it was easy.
