Hood Insulation

Anyone know if the hood insulation really serves a real purpose? I thought about removing it but decided not to.

Helps protect the paint from motor/exhaust heat damage I believe. And sound.

Why would Ford spend the money to design, manufacture, inventory and install the hood insulation if it served no purpose?
