'92 Windshield Chrome

How the heck do these clips work. My windshield trim popped off from my 1992 F-150, just the top section.

Do you hook the top or bottom of the clip in the chrome trim somehow and then pop it.
I tried just positioning the chrome over the clip and hitting it with the heel of my hand but had no luck.

No, I gave up worrying about it and used some RTV sealant and glued it on. It has held fine so far.

One day I will take it to a glass or auto body place and get someone to fix it right.

First you need to ensure that the clip is still on the truck. Sometimes the little post that the clip attaches to will rust off, rendering the clip useless. Lets assume that the clip is secure, and that you have removed any rust or dirt that may be keeping the clip from doing its job. Wedge the top edge of the trim over the clip, at a angle, not quite 45 degrees, but definitely not straight on. From there, the heel of your hand is usually the best tool for installation. If that doesnt work, a rubber mallet, or 2x4 and ball peen work.
