Whats the chances of a key opening different vehicles? 2005 E350 cargo van. This is what I found out. My partner need to use my work van. He searched the key box. Found a key that opened the door but didn't start the vehicle. He told me about it, ok that's weird. He said yea, a chevy key opened the door once. So for ****s and giggles, I tried the key from my 2000 f-150. Unlocked all doors with easy. Like it was ment to. It wouldn't start the vehicle. I looked at the 2 keys. The cuts are 98% the same. I tried the van key on my truck key opened the doors. Wouldn't unlock the ignition. I wouldn't try to start, because I have the chip in the key. Just a werd thing.

 

My church has a 7.3 Diesel school bus E-450 and a 15 passenger regular van E-350 and the same key opens doors on both and starts both.

 

The US government only requires that passenger vehicles be keyed no less than 1/1000. That means that your chances are slim but not too slim that your key will fit another. We had a case in my town where a fellow walked out of out mall, got in his Cutlas and drove home (16 miles) once he got there he opened the trunk only to discover that his earlier purchases were not there. He soon realized that that car, same year/make/model/color had a box of tissues in it that his did not. He called the police and they advised that the correct owner would be there (via police ride) to get his car and he was welcome to ride back to get his own. Funny story but also scarry too!
