Rear door window help

I guess this is the correct place to post this.

Here's my problem. the other morning, as I was taking my daughter to school, she was putting up the window in the passenger rear door when we heard a loud sound from inside the door panel. Right then, the window glass started to slowly slide down in the channel. This morning, I removed the door panel to try to find out what the problem was. I discovered that one of the steel cables that raises/lowers the window glass has broken, apparently at the point where it connects to the window glass. The motor still works, but, obviously, the cable is no longer connected to the glass. The glass slides freely up and down in the channel. I currently have a towel stuffed in the crack to prevent the window from sliding all the way down. I guess my question is, if anyone else has had this problem, and how much did it cost to repair. (I am not covered by warranty.)

Thanks in advance.

I've had both front doors fail in the same manner. The window regulators on these trucks (04-08) are junk.

I have paid from $130 to $145 at the dealer for replacement window regulators for the fronts, the rears should be around that too. I changed them myself.

In the meantime before I could fix things I took a small pair of vise grips and pushed the window in the up position and clamped the vise grips on the window track against the window bottom, keeping the window up until I had time to change it. I've driven with the window like that for months before.

Thanks for the reply, Stealth. I just spent the past hour following a step-by-step article I found and repaired the window regulator myself. The cable that attaches to the window clamp had come loose. It took some effort to dissassemble, and then reassemble the cable system that operates the window. The biggest PITA was getting the cable wrapped around the pulley correctly, then reattaching the motor to the regulator assembly without the cable coming unwound. Works great again. I agree that the construction of the regulators is sub-par. We will see how long this lasts, I will probably be forced to replace the regulator at some point in the future, at least now I know how.

I will post the link to the article I found...

Both of mine were not repairable. The first one I went up and down with the cable after the window fell in the door, big mistake, ruined the cable and turned it into a bird nest and bent the cable all up. The latest one had a cable connector snap.

It's nice to have articles like that, but I usually just jump in there.

Yeah, the article didn't cover the difficulty involved with rewrapping the cable on the pulley part. I had the "birds nest" too, but I was able to recall on my experience removing birds nests from fishing reels!

I've never used 1,000,000 pound test before though.

LOL thats a good one! Well, it has been a few days now, and the 5 minute epoxy seems to be keeping the cable from pulling out of the plastic slider.
:still keeping fingers crossed:
