Can I paint chrome step bars?

I'd like to spray paint my chrome stock step bars black so they go better with the other accessories on my truck. Can you paint over chrome? Will it stick and what techniques should I use? Thanks.

It has been done. First you must sand well. Start with about 40-60 grit preferably on a grinder. Maybe get what is called a flapper disk to sand with. Next and this is crucial you must use an etching primer which has a mild to medium acid base. Sand and prime twice. On the 2nd time around use a finer grit such as 100-120 grit Then use a good quality paint. Then finish with a coat of good quality Clear coat.
