Painting Question
Painting Question
I've got a question about automotive painting.
I've got an air compressor and a gravity fed paint gun, DA sander with the right grits to do the job right...
My question is more on the paint... I know they have "basecoats" then the "clearcoats". I was poking around on the web and I was checking out PPG's website. I found the color I wanted... but they only had the basecoat from my terminology. I could not find the clearcoat... but they had this stuff called acrylic coat? Is that clearcoat? OR does it have to SAY clearcoat?
I'm like totally confused and baffled.
Oh, and this isn't for my F150, it's for my Dakota... because I repainting the bumpers to match body color. However, if it comes out great, I won't be afraid to sand up my grey bumpers and color match them to the body paint on my F150. So the Dak's the test mule sort of speak...
I'm sure the painting will come out fine... just I want to know the automotive painting terminology and what the heck they mean... because it really through me when I read it.

biggest tip i can think of, is if you do the F150 bumpers, get some filler primer, and build up some of the surface so you dont have to sand down the entire texture off the bumper
Hmmmm... not really answers I was generally looking for...
But........ Patman you made a good point about the F150's bumper...
There's gotta be someone who's dealt with auto paint on this forum... there's just gotta be...

For that top piece that's plastic get plastic adhesion promoter, then prime and paint/clear with a basecoat/clearcoat. This acrylic coat seems to me like something you put over an acrylic paint, so no dice there.
