Chrome step bar scratches

I have 140 miles on a 06 Lariat that has the chrome step bar. The black plastic step is already scratched from stepping into the truck. Is this a common problem? Any ideas on a fix?

the black is just plastic (like the bed rail caps) and yes it will scratch.
