Need camper shell advice

With the aftermath of Katrina, I'm going to be helping even more with animal transport, and I usually am not able to use my truck for this in the summertime because it's just too hard to keep the back safely cool enough for the critters.

So I'm going to try to remedy this by putting in a sliding glass window. No problem there, thanks to the very good advice I've found here.

I have one of those generic (very unattractive) aluminum toppers that I put on the truck only when I need it. It's not model-specific or fitted to the truck the way a permanent one would be. In fact, it has sort of a gutter or ridge on it that keeps it from being pushed flush against the back of the cab, which is good.

I can remove the front glass of the topper so that there's A/C flow between the cab and the back, but any ideas of how to seal the gap between the cab and the topper so that the A/C actually gets to the back of the truck?

Thanks!

Tracey

I have not bought one in years but they used to makea blow up "boot" to go between the cab and the cap to seal that area. I would go to a local cap distributor and ask them if they have them or know where you could get one. Other option is to start a web search.

Yes - I KNEW I'd seen something like that, and I think the place where I bought my topper has them. Thanks for jogging my memory.

The boot is an ok idea for long term application. Just remember that those boots are prone to rubbing through the paint. If you do go with that, make sure you by a cab skin. Basically, it is a transparent plastic "sticker" that goes around the rear cab window and the boot surface rubs that, not your paint.

Here's what I plan to try - I have ordered a sliding window for the truck. Meanwhile, I removed the front window from the topper. I bought three of those foam "noodles" that kids use in the pool and cut them to length and then split them down the middle. I wrapped those around the now-empty window frame on the topper so they will form a seal (I hope) when the topper is on the truck.

Thanks for the advice about the cab skin. I'll definitely use that before putting the topper on - those noodles can probably rub the paint.

I'm going to do something similar. While searching the internet I found this site:
http://www.pickupspecialties.com/Camper_shell_parts.htm
They sell the rubber boots that go between the shell and the truck.
Hope this helps.
