Finish on black toolboxes?

I was wondering if anyone on here has had any trouble with the black finish on a toolbox. A friend of mine told me he has saw it peel off before but i always thought it was the same stuff used on grille gaurds and such. I'm going to have to buy a box pretty soon because when i get my box behind my seat i'll have no room for my other junk. I want black because i already have black nerfs on the way and I plan on gettin a black grille/tailight gaurds in a month or two and a bright tool box wouldnt look right. I dont know anybody personally with a powerdercoated toolbox, can't find anything online about the durability and I'm going to have to drive about 60 miles each way to Tractor Supply to get one and i dont want to go buy something thats not going to hold up. Thanks for anyones opinion.

I just got one... so i cant really comment on the longevity of the finish... but they are usually powdercoated (mine is). Powdercoating is very strong and if it is well done and relatively well cared for it should lost just as long, if not longer than the trucks paint job. Im sure that if you put one in the back of a work truck it would get scratched up ... just like the rest of the truck. But, the finish is not just going to flake off.

If it is going to get scratched by stuff being hauled in the bed... (ie ladders, tools random stuff flying around the bed...) I would have the box coated in line X. I thought about doing this myself... but i think in my case the finish should hold up fine. If it doesnt im going ot get it sprayed.

I have a black Diamond Plated and so far, no signs of flake or peel. I have had it about a year. I don't beat and bang on it much, I just use it to keep a few things in it. I can't say if you are rough on it what will happen, but so far so good. Hope this helps.

My cousin has one on his 03 Scab and it still looks great. No peeling or flaking.

I’ve had mine for about a year and so far, there’s no problem with the finish peeling off. I did get a few scratches but I touched them up with black paint. This is a recent pic & there’s one in my gallery when I first got it

Thanks guys it was probably a redneck home-made paint job my friend saw. I won't be using my box hard just for storing a few things, tow-rope (for Chevy's of course), and all the normal behind the seat junk that wont go behind my seat when i get my system in.

I was on my way home today and an F350 pulled up next to me at a light. I looked over at the truck and it had a black tool box in the bed and it was flaking pretty bad. I immediately thought of this thread. The tool box was a HUSKY brand. It's the first time I had ever noticed this on any tool box. Just thought I'd pass the info along in case anyone still cared.

Tool box

I've got the UWS (United Welding Service) tool box in black. Absolutely no problems whatsoever.

I'll upload some pics as soon as I figure out how to scan my Polaroids! Ha!

Go with UWS boxes, the low profile lids look great with our trucks and do not block any rear visbility. I went ahead and had mine rhino-lined red just to match my truck bullbar, but I have yet to see a flaking toolbox on any of the trucks I've been around.
