Solid Rear Window Leaks
I just picked up a 1998 F150 XLT 4x4 X-Cab in great shape. The only problem is the solid rear window leaks on the passenger side. I tried using silicone where the roof meets the molding, but no luck. I searched the archives, but I've only read this happening on sliders. Any ideas?
I had the same problem, it leaked onto my seat, but it was on the driver's side. I took it back to the dealer under warranty and they re-sealed it for me. I don't know what to tell you, you could call them and see what they do. Good luck
I have a slider in my truck, but my guess is the solid rear window is held in place the same way. Mine leaked like crazy on both sides. I removed the rear window and saw that the seal was mis-placed around the window. But the big thing that stuck out to me was that the window is held in by 8 studs on the window and a nut. 2 on each end 2 in middle (top-bottom). This does not allow the window to be torqued down enough to make a proper seal. The dealer gave me some BS line that my window frame was warped and that the window needed to be replace to the tune of about $500. Out of warranty on time only. I replaced the seal and put the window back in. It now only drips slowly versus a water fall. I called customer service to discuss this propblem and the bimbo customer service person who makes minimum wage and thinks she is an automotive engineer denies that they have any problems with this. All you have to do is look on this board to see that is not the case. I have a friend who has a 97 F-150 just like mine and her window sarted leaking 2 weeks ago in the exact same place. My dealer basically told me to go blow also. Thats why I took the window out myself. If you have the time and motivation, you can remove the window and try a repair. You can get the window seal at the auto parts store for about 10 bucks. Nothing like spending 20k+ on a new truck and have the window leak in 3 years. I hope enough people complain to FORD that they will acknowledge there is a problem here and do something about it. Good Luck.
Thanks for the advice. I called my Ford dealer, who referred me to a local glass repair shop. They both said that this is a common problem, citing the seal as the usual culprit. He'll replace it on Tuesday for $125. They both also mentioned warranty, but I'm at 97k, so no luck.
I recently got a rear sliding window for free from a buddy who had a leaking rear window and when replaced ford gave the original back to him. When talking with the auto supply place about how to seal the window, Mentioned that ford had this problem with some rear windows due to the seals. Appartly ford had been using a rubber seal that was in a stock roll form. as they would install the window any disruption would cause the seal to roll over and not bond well. He said all the glass installers have gone to a rubberized type coating that comes in a tube - More like the front windshield adhesive. I purchased a tube for about $10 and installed my rear sliding window this weekend. Haven't had the truck sitting out in the rain yet only driving in it - so far no leaks.
