Question Rear Window Leak

I have a 97 F-150 X-cab with sliding rear window. I have been noticing for the past couple of weeks of a musty smell in my truck.

I think that it is coming from around my rear window somewhere.

I was wondering if someone has heard of anyone else having this problem or might have excperienced it themselves and can lead me in the right direction to look first and what fix is needed.

I am going to pull the rear seats out this evening and possibly the carpet depenting on how wet everything is.

Thanks...
Alan

rear window leak

my 98 lariat was like that, it was problem because we get 6 months of rain with an average of 21 cyclones a year. but mine was solved with out removing the windows but simply applying silicone around the gaps of the whole window assembly. if you can get black silicone and can get a glass man to appy it smoothly it will be done

Took my rear window out this past weekend and replaced the seal. I also painted the fading trim ring also.

Took my longer than I would like to remember, but my window as far as I could tell is sealed correctly.

took it to a auto glass shop they couldnt stop the leak then the ford dealer told me those windows are bad to leak and he had even had them right from factory that leaked and they had to replace the whole window ...he said there a rubber seal thats made onto the window and that it i need to replace the whole window that sounds weird but thats what 2 dealrs have told me.....the one seal u can replace but the one mad onto the window itself is bad to leak right about rear brake light into cab.....

I stopped by the auto glass place that I got my seal from and he told me that he thought there was a recall on it and that the window itself can come apart from the frame and leak there, like what you were saying.

Im going to try to find information on a recall if there was one and try to get it replaced that way.

Thanks,
Alan

So, can someone tell me how the rear trim ring comes off? Does it just snap-on to the window frame? I know I'll have to take the high-mount brake light out, but are there any other fasteners I need to worry about? How do I remove it without scratching my paint?

thanks

The trim ring comes out just like the window. I think that there are 8 nuts on the trim ring that you need to take off from the inside and then the ring will come off. The trim ring is very light, so you shouldnt have any problems with it scratching the paint any where.

Like BIG mentioned, there are several clips/screws in the interior of the truck behind the plastic moldings.

OK, thanks! For some reason I was thinking it was just clipped onto the outside of the window frame and I could pry it off (hence concern about scratching the paint) once the brake light was out of the way, but that would have been too easy.

So, I have to take the interior trim off -- I assume the headliner needs to come out too?

Didn't have to on mine... the interior moldings go up to the roof but, didn't require me to drop the headliner.

After taking my window out for the second time, I found out that the window itself had seperated from the frame.

I was lucky enough to find a window at my local auto glass shop, that they have had up in the rafters new in the box for 60.00 + tax.

So, hopefully tonight I will have a nice new, sealed, leak free window.

L8...
