Post F-150 last in new crash test - USA Today

I have to admit that the crash video was stunning!

They saved the crash of the world's best-selling vehicle for last -- and it finished last.

"There was total structural failure," says Brian O'Neill, head of the Insurance Institue for Highway Safety, which did the testing. "The occupant compartment collapsed. The air bag was late in firing."

Wow!

I saw the video on TV last evening -- and the venerable 150 opened up like a squashed pumpkin -- with the roof parting from the driver's door with what seemed enough room to crawl through -- only the driver wouldn't have been able to crawl, as I saw it.

The crash test, noted as a very severe one, due to the offset frontal impact into an immovable barrier told me one thing:

If the choice is a family sedan or a bridge abutment -- choose the family sedan!

This will undoubtedly help to knock Ford's F-150 out of the number one spot for 2001 -- that's the prediction of...

Guess again. Ford sells alot more trucks than Chevy to get knocked off the top.

I saw the pics today in the paper... not very reassuring. Just curious, though... what percentage of front-end traffic accidents are 40% offset frontal crashes? What percentage of front-end accidents are 100% head-on accidents? Those are the numbers I would like to see in order to put the crash stats into perspective. I want to have a truck that performs the best for the most common types of crashes.

Also, didn't they test just a single truck? Isn't it possible that the late airbag deployment could be some glitch in just that truck and not the whole model line?

Just curious....

Maybe FORD figured that since there will be so much damage
to the truck, it's best to deploy the airbag late so the owner
won't be around to cry over his broken truck.

As per my request (for the 20th time), please keep these discussions in the "Safety & Maintenance" forum where they belong.
