paint on roof and hood.
paint on roof and hood.
I have a 2000 Ford F-150 sport 4x4 that is black. The paint on the roof started cracking and peeling up about a year ago with rust all under the paint and I had to have it repainted. I thought it was just an isolated event and my autobody guy said it was possible that the roof had been repainted as I bought it used from a Michigan dealer. I very recently saw two more F-150's, one a 2000 and one a 2001, in my hometown here in Ga. with the same problem one of which was bought brand new and has never been damaged or painted. Is this a widespread problem? Is there a recall on this? Did we just get sucky trucks? Any feed back would be appreciated.
really?
I thought our paint had a warranty much longer than the factory three year. Certain items are covered longer than others.
I had mine re-painted as well from collision damage (damn chevy).
Why did they repaint your roof? It couldn't have been in a rollover.
Last thing. Find out if Michigan has full disclosure laws, if it does you might still have litiagation against the dealer for failure to comply.
As to the warranty, I'm gonna call and find out. You got me curious.

unfortunately it is a common problem.
i had my roof redone a week after i purchased my brand new 2003 supercrew. don't know if Ford will cover yours under warranty after that long. more then likely not since it's not rusted right thru. doesn't hurt to ask thou. good luck

My truck wasn't rolled over, however, according to the carfacts report it was reported to have been painted three times once in '01, once in '03, and once in '04 although in various places all listed factory defects as the reason for repainting. My autobody guy told me that it took two gallons of stripper to strip the paint on the roof and hood. I don't believe I have any way of retribution for the dealer not complying on anything because I actually bought it at a wholesale auction from this dealer. The price was awesome but I've spent what I would've have paid for one that was already right in correcting the problems it had. Anyway I figured mine and my friends couldn't be the only ones like this so I appreciate the feed back, if you guys have anything else to add I would appreciate all the feedback possible. If there is any way for me to get retribution for the $1,800 I spent on paint I sure want it
Finally someone who has the same experience. I had posted my paint problem in the door crack thread in this forum. Here is a copy of my paint problem:
I have a paint problem as well. After buying truck at 2 years old an 32,000 miles in 2000, paint started to develop fine spider web cracks all over the hood. Roof now has it, as well as drivers side door, fenders on both sides and now starting on passenger side door. Box is fine. Went back to dealer body shop to have it looked at, techs said either vehicle was in an accident or someone painted over the areas that have the spider web appearance. Why you ask? Well, they didn't have an answer for me. They then checked the paint thickness with a digital guage and the areas with the spider web appearance was something like twice the factory thickness. Hence, the spider web cracks. They also cannot find any damage to the truck to warrant repainting. So, the conclusion by the dealer body shop guys is that it was painted like that at the factory as they had problems with black trucks of that year. Went back to my sales guy and he emphatically said there is nothing they could do because the paint is out of warranty. Paint was out of warranty a few months after I bought the truck (3 years or 36,000) from time of manufacture. Extended warranty did not cover paint.
I am discusted with the matter of fact attitude of my dealer with this problem. No help whatsoever in resolving my problem.
Will I try and go get my doors fixed? Nope. I won't be going back there anymore. Will I buy a Ford truck again? Probably, since the truck has only been in the shop for the failed head, intake, and timing chain cover gaskets that are so prevalent with this model of truck. Ford honored those under warranty no questions asked so that is a good sign.
GayBoy, What is carfacts? Can I get access to see if my truck paint problems were recorded there?

Uhh, I think his username is GAboy... not GAY. I think it pertains to Georgia... not... well, um.. you know.
Anyway... I had this on my 01 KR as well. It's commonly known as solvent pop within the automotive painting industry and is a result of solvent being unflashed and trapped beneath a dried surface. The solvent, because of heat and other factors, actually causes the upper clear to crack. This, in turn, compromises the color coat as well...
It is a common occurrence on today's modern catalyzed painted finishes. The only cure is a repaint...

Maroon98XL,
CARFAX is a vehicle history report. It's very useful if you are buying a used car/truck. I used it when I bought mine, it costs about $20 or something, but it was well worth it for the piece of mind.

GAY BOY?
UHHHH...... I haven't checked my posts in a couple of days but I'm sure glad rockpick set you straight on the whole GAY boy vs. GABoy deal. If you look at my profile you will see that I am from Georgia and although we do have gay people here most of them tend to drive Saturn's, Honda Scion's, and Mini Coopers not four wheel drive F-150's with 34's. Plus most of them (if not all of them) live in Atlanta not rural mid-west GA. ( there's just something about 10 Baptist Churches per sq. mile and the local distaste for homosexuality that turns them away) None the less, I trust that it was an honest mistake and if not..... well now you know.... I'm not Gay. On to other business.... I don't think this problem is isolated only to "black" trucks as one post suggested because I have seen on other dark colored trucks such as the forrest green colors also. I had to have a total repaint, luckily the painter was a family friend but I still dropped 1k on the hood, the roof, and the passenger side door. Hope your paint issues work out for you also.
My 99 F150 also has these type of cracks. And just as mentioned, the vehicles paint thinkness mils double of factory standards. I actually met a PPG paint representative that told me it is common for manufacturers to run vehicles through twice if defects were found. He gauged the thickness and found it to be 11 MILS in a lot of areas. My cab is where everything is happening. The bed is OK and gauged on average of 6 MILS. To do any paint work, the cab has to be sanded down to metal. In my area, that's about $6K to do it.
First off, FORD will not fix the door cracks and according to customer service ... they don't have these problems but everyone knows they are hiding from their responsibilities. This website alone proves FORD has major problems with their F150 truckline. Now the paint problems. Again, FORD says its my problem.
Has anyone found any other solution to force FORD to own up to the problem and offer assistance? Its one thing if I run my $36,000 truck through the woods and into mud pits but mine has seen very little off of pavement. I'm sick of FORD and this truck. Its really been a decent truck except these two "MAJOR" issues but this is enough to get disgusted with it all. I don't know where else to turn though .....
I've hounded Chrysler with 2 lawyers over my JEEP Cherokee Limited which turned out to be a LEMON
and I had paint problems with a TOYOTA CAMRY LXE where I was pissed off and showed my a-- with TOYOTA.
I also had a Camaro Z28 that had transmission problems so bad CHEVROLET couldn't fix it but it was just out of warranty. The only thing that has been good is my Honda CBR! Cars SUCK and Bikes RULE!

Will let U know on paint
Am taking the 150 SuperCrew in tomorrow for a bumper repair... I started the dispute resolution process on Friday re: the paint on the top of the cab. It is peeling badly - you can tell the paint is very thin. I won't give in on this - there is a defect in the way the truck is painted...Ford will repair - UNDER WARRANTY! I'm in no rush and will get to the bottom of this. If anyone else has paint problems with the 150, please let me know. Txs!
Ive got an 02, bought it with 12 miles on it (it now has 64,000) and I have somewhat the same issues with my paint as well. My first cracks started actually appearing in the water channels on the sides of the roof of the truck. Within the past year, however, the spider cracks have started gradually appearing all over the top of the truck. But, as of yet, I have not seen any cracks on the hood.
