Bed Cap
I'm thinking about purchasing a decent bed cap for my truck. I'm considering getting one for no particular reason other than I think they look nice, especially when they are color keyed to match the rest of the truck (of course). I don't do much hauling (a few loads of mulch twice a year is really about it) but I'm thinking that as soon as I put it on, I'll need to yank it off to haul something that won't fit. I'm basically looking for input from you guys on the pro's and con's of putting a bed cap on. What's a good brand, etc. Thanks alot.

I have a ******* fiberglass top that I am getting rid of and replacing it with a Retrax bed cover that rolls up into a box. Yesterday I called Retrax and got in on a group buy from this site. Should have the new top by the 15th of May.
I ran in to too many situations where my load was taller than my ******* cover.
I hauled a treadmill once and it looked like a sail from a tall ship going down the street.

I have a Glasstite Targa Topper on my 2000 F150 SuperCab. Glasstite is an excellent topper and I have few if any problems. You can check out Glasstite's products at Glasstite.com. The paint is color matched to my truck (two stage, base coat and clear). Glasstite products are not inexpensive, but they are worth the cost. I've also heard good comments regarding A.R.E.
I have a Century. A little heavier built than the Leer the dealer also sold as evident when you picked them both up. The Century was noticably heavier. They were the same price and I got a light in the Century no extra charge so I went with the Century. Color matched perfect. As long as you go with a recognised name brand from a reputable dealer you'll be OK.
One thing I wish I had was a single lever in the middle of the back door instead of one on each side.
As far as ever wishing you didn't have it on to haul something? I'm a contractor and believe me my truck bed gets USED! And in the 15 or so yrs. I've had caps on my trucks, I can't think of a time when I've had to take it off(and I have a cab height). And on the outside chance you ever DID have to take it off its not that big of a deal. I consider mine to be a necessity as I don't have to worry about leaving stuff in it with rain/snow/or blowing out while driving down the highway.
One other thing, appearance was important to me. There all pretty much the same but I chose the clean, "no buttons on the glass" look. Look at the topper and the brochures (most of the time they'll show one on a Ford), to see how it'll look on your truck.
Good Luck!
