I'm going to make my non-functional hood functional. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Never had one before and I have a few Q's:
What do I do about dust, leaves, rain and snow getting into the engine compartment. I don't do much(if any) off-roading.
Are adapter kits adaptable to my k&n fipk? If not, how do I hook up the filter?
Here's a pic...

Thanks in advance for help!
P.S.: No cracks from you, Willie!!!

I'm still planning on doing that soon. I think for leaves and stuff I'm going to get cut outs of that SS grille and put them in there to block all that stuff. However rain will be tricky.
I wish I knew how some other functional hoods work, because rain will go down and in the holes real damned easy. I do know that there is a very similar hood that is actually functional, and I've been trying to find an undershot of it. Maybe I'll find the name of the other one, but we are kind of limited on exactly where to put the holes. They have to be damn near to the firewall cause the holes are actually pretty much end up that far back.
If you know what to do about rain, I'd like to know. I think I just plan on not hooking an intake upto it and just letting it cool the engine compartment.
I dunno, I kinda hope someone else pops in.

i think that i saw that one man! don't know the site, but it had an under shot of the hood. cobra style too! it had a special rubber hook up piece that went right over your air cleaner. it also had metal channel tubing that ran through the under body to the port on top. wish i knew what site, damn been to so many looking for a damn hood. let me try to look for it and i'll post a pic.
found the site

if it works cool. i'm not too good at this computer hyperlink crap. if not, then type it out. but you'll have to click on ahood you want to lookaton the left side of the web page, then scroll down and click "more info", and it will show you whati wassaying about the channeling, hope it helps to all!

Actually this one. I saw it like 3 years ago before I bought my hood, but this one had yet to come out. I think I've got an old article on it, I'll try to dig it up and see if they explain. eBay Hood
I might have to take a better look at everything, but I don't think theres any good way or place to run any channeling. That's why I wanna take a good look at everything and see if theres a good way to do it.

ive had my ram air setup for around 6 months and 15,000 miles now and have had no issues so far. i used my stock airbox with a K&N drop in filter. it keeps out all of the debris that gets sucked. I just recently cleaned it and found leaves sticks and bugs in there lol.
i too was worried about the rain issue. i tried to think of ways i could keep the water out, but was never able to come up with a good solution and i just left it as is. ive driven at 80 mph during heavy rain one more than one occasion and have yet to have any problems. i believe the distance the water would have to travel to reach the throttle body, the weight and size of the drops itself, and the filter really make impossiblefor water to make it all the to the engine. i did drill a small hole in the bottom of my airbox to act as a drain just incase any water did settle in there.
as far as ur K&N fipk, i think the only way u could adapt it to work with a ram air setup would be to create a custom box to enclose the filter and have a place for the air to enter. otherwise u could jus go back to ur stock intake. its all about having a channel for the air to make it to the engine with a filter installed somewhere inbetween.
hope this helps and gl

hey bro, just saw, i think it was smokin's try at it. looks like he put some foam down by the throttle body cover. i just got an idea. if you (and hopefully I someday) put a piece of the plastic 'chicken wire looking stuff' but with close knit holes, and a thin piece of dense foam behind it, the 'chicken wire looking stuff' should keep out leaves and road debris, and the foam should do the trick for the rain and snow, but even if rain does get in it, i honestly think that it won't hurt it any, unless someone dumped a bucket of water on ya while you were dropping the hammer!! plus with the cobra style, the hole would be inside the hood kinda. we'll see huh? I have had mine also for a whole summer and a butt load of miles and many a rain storms and havent had any water issues. What I found is that the water can not make the bends and still be suspended in the air flow. Actually in a good rain most of the water will hit the back of my scoop and be force backout along the sides. I have seen water flowing out from the front edges of my scoop when at speed in the rain. I have stopped and popped the hood and found almost no rain in the airbox. I have found a few leaves and a good many bugs, but I clean my K&N filter regularly so thats not really an issue.
As far as snow, even a foam pad further up the air passage will collect snow and freeze. I have tested several ways and found it best to just unhook the system in the winter.
My scoop has a foam seal were it sits on the hood so as not to wear on the paint and to seal the scoop. ( pics in gallery under mods) All this only applies of coarse to a GT style scoop, not sure how rain may effect a aftermarket style, and like smok][n, I too drilled small drain holes in my air box..

I'm getting a better understanding of what I have to do. I think I'm going to make the cowl part functional and use the cobra part as a heat extractor by just drilling out the holes(not all the way, so I can attach a screen). Am I right for thinking that a little bit of water in the engine compartment won't do any harm, unless under extreme circumstances?
Sleddog: when you say unhook the system, does the hole of your hood stay open? Sorry for the dumb Q

willie, the foam by the throttle body is used only to keep that box at the right position and height so that it fits snugly against the underside of my hood. i plan on eliminatnig that by cutting a block of wood the right shape and size to keep it in place, and then cover it with black sheet metal. but this is all for cosmetic purposes.
u may be confused how sledd's and mine works... the air from the hood scoop is channeled all the way back to the stock air box before going to the engine. it would be nice to have it go straight down into the throttle body like that, but it would require very odd shaped tubing, a custom filter and MAF relocation.
as far as using foam to collect the water, im not sure that it would help much. the foam would ge saturated and the water would still eventually drip down. also your air flow would be gretly restricted. a screen would procted against leaves and things, but so does the filter in the airbox.
right now the only thing between the air coming into the hood scoop and my throttle body is a K&N filter, and i havent had any problems so far. of course i dont get any snow down here...
