Angry Chime

This is more of an annoyance than a problem.
I tend to work outside a lot with my truck near by, and I would really like to be able to leave the radios ( both broadcast and 2-way) on without hearing the warning chime!
I do NOT want to disable the chime, I feel it's very valuable.
I do know about the "screwdriver in the door latch" trick, but am certain at some point I will slam the door shut and damage the latch components.
What I want to do is put a switch inline with the chime so I can turn it off when I don't want to hear it.
Does anyone.. (A) Know the exact location of the chime? (B) Know of a good way of placing a switch inline with the chime?

Thank You,
Rick Critcher

Why not leave the windows down and close the door?

have you looked at which fuse would disable the chime? perhaps it's isolated on a light circuit which might two fold turn off the interior lights as well as the chime. ?

Leaving the windows open just doesn't cut it!
As for the fuse, the owner's manual doesn't list which fuse the chime is on! My brother said to just take the door apart and find the switch, I just hate to rip apart something that is working well for something so trivial!!
I am heading to a dealer soon and will pick their brains.

Thanks for the input!

Good idea, please post "how-to" and results if you do go with the in-line switch. I might do the same thing if it's not too much trouble.

Put the switch on the door/domelight switch so that it thinks the door is shut.

Ditto!

The chime can drive you crazy! My Ranger was very easy to disable. The chime mechanism was right within reach. Just stuck my hand under the dash and yanked it out.

I guess the switch would be nice but if all else failed no chime would work. When I first got my truck I spent quite a bit of time under the dash looking for the pesky chime! Never could find it.

Red face

A note of caution I forgot to mention in my last post. When I was poking around under my dash looking for a ignition-only power lead, I was grounding out different wires to see if any would work (BTW never did find one under there -- had to use my autolamp switch). One of the wires I touched and grounded out was the door chime, and it started to sound off. Be VERY careful that you don't accidentally ground out the airbag! I stopped poking around right after finding the chime, and started thinking about what else was there that could go off if I were to ground it out.

Good luck,

Jim

Thanks for all the interest!
I've enlisted the help of some folks that I think can help, we're going to talk Friday.
When I do get this finished I will make a post here to describe what we did.
