Question What Happens to Passenger Airbag Door Cover Upon Deployment??

Ok, probably a real dumb question, but I'm asking it anyhow. Why doesn't the passenger airbag door cover come up and whap you up across the face when the airbag deploys at 200 mph??? What happens to the cover anyhow? Is it hinged so that it stays attached to the dash? What does it do?

I would guess that the airbag cover has a thicker seam across the top portion of the cover than it does across the bottom. This should cause the bottom seam to break first which would make the cover go towards the windshield. The only other thing I can think of would be that the cover is really just a piece of interior colored aluminum foil. Just like Jiffy Pop, only MUCH faster.

My buddy hit a dear while we were going down the road in his 99 F150. All I saw was a white cloud then a bad smell. The drivers side cover kinda peeled open and the passengers(where I was) was hinged at the top and went towards the windshield on deployment. The covers stayed attached to their respective areas after they went off.

Cool

HarleyGuy,
Man I was only kidding about the forehead thing! It sounds like 2000Fordstyle hit the nail on the head. Makes since that it goes up because if it went down, Ford would take a chance on smacking someone in the knees with a piece of plastic moving at 200mph.

Harleyrider, I know you were kidding! I did get curious as to how it operates, though, and now, thanks to 2000FordStyle, we have an answer!
