Post paint defects

Well as I was giving my truck a good wax job.I noticed some things that really didn't like.On the back edge of the passenger door there is a spot where it looks like the paint ran about 1/4 inch and then stopped leaving this *ball* of paint. Also on the passenger side, there is a spot, where it appears as though something got on the primer before the truck was painted with its color two *flakes*(lack of a better word) sticking out. Each is about a 1/4 the size of a penny.Anybody else have problems like these? Do you guys think its worth taking it in to ford and have them take care of it?It seems kinda odd that all of the paint problems are on the passenger side, where I would never see them(until a wax job).Any thoughts are appreciated

Some things are better left alone ----------You could you get your truck back with a hole in the seat or dent in the door or even worse. And guess what the dealer will say "It was there when it came in here" I can speak from experience. They will park your truck next to a carload of kids in a stationwagon that will bang your doors. Or a mechanic with a screwdriver in his pocket that will poke holes in your seats.

I agree with Bubbadewsky..unless it is really bad..let it go.

A guy I know where I work took his Excursion in to have the first oil change under warranty at the local Ford Dealership. He went to pick up his truck late in the afternoon..and to his horror..found his SUV in the body shop! The drivers side taillight was hanging down and the rear fender had been repainted.

He raised hell..and found out the mechanic had somehow put a small hole in the metal just below the side window. They almost had it repainted and ready before he walked in.

If he had waited another hour...he would have most likely discovered this at a later date..then the dealership would have claimed ignorance and put the blame on him.

He did contact an attorney and the dealership replaced the XLT Excursion with a 2001 Limited model, less mileage depreciation ($2,000)--(I guess being the largest realtor family in Columbus Georgia has some weight).

Again..unless it is really worth it...I would let it go.

Thumbs down

My thoughts are to let it go, but for different reasons than mentioned. My reason is that they will make more of a mess fixing it then you already have. You'll likely have overspray marks, etc. You will probably be able to see where the truck has been touched up with the spray. The finish they put on to fix things is never as good as the factory finish.

I think I will just let it go, but it just kinda pisses me off that I have a $24,000 dollar truck in the drivway with a some defects in the paint. It could be worse though.

I have to disagree a little with the statement that it is never as good as the factory finish. I have worked at three different bodyshops, two being Ford dealerships. The finish and blend on any repair job is only as good as the person doing the job. I have personally seen vehicles that are repaired before they ever hit the lot. Transport damage, rail dust, acid rain etc. etc...all take their toll on a car or truck before the truck/car ever makes it to the dealer.
Most paints that modern dealers use is the same paint that are used on show cars. Sikkens,Glasurit,PPG,Dupont just to name a few. It is entirely possible lightningcrashz truck is one of the unfortunate transport damaged ones, and the repair wasn't perfect, who knows,,,98

I too had minor paint defects, but I took it back in to the dealership against the advice of many friends. Much to everyone's surprise, the dealership was able to fix 2 paint chips, and 3 oversprays all in different areas of my silver SuperCrew and it came out perfectly. It took them a week, but it was well worth it. I couldn't agree w/ 98SCREAMER more, it all depends on who's doing the repair.

I can feel your pain. I bought my truck last year, and after a few days, I found a "ball" of paint at the edge of my driver's door. The dealership wasn't much help, and I sure didn't want to break factory paint in order to fix it. Luckily for me, a car detailer friend of mine said that the "ball" of paint might be just a glob of clear coat, and not pigment under the clear coat that I first thought. He tried buffing it out, and wow, it came right off!!! He told me that he has seen quite a few F150's that seem to have areas with too much clear, and that they could be buffed out. Because clear is just a layer of non-pigmented paint over pigmented paint, it may give you the illusion that the "ball" of paint on your passenger door is too much pigment (which only repainting can fix), but it may just be clear coat overrun, which can be buffed out by a car detailer with a orbital buffer.

As for your other paint flaws, I have some of those as well, and trust me, mine came with my truck. So don't feel so bad, because things like paint orange peel and fish eyes seem to be a common characteristic of our trucks. Remember, they build many F150s, and quantity over quality seems to be the order of the day for Ford right now, especially since these are the best selling vehicles in the United States.
