FORD Dismissed call to fix (Door) Latch!!!
FORD Dismissed call to fix (Door) Latch!!!
Okay, this was in the Sunday, May 2nd, 2004 edition of the Detroit Free press:
It basically says the Door Latches on MY 97-00' vehicles: F-150, F-250, Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models fail to meet Federal Safety specs. Specifically, the spec is Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 206. The company says it meets an alternative spec, but Benz was sued when it tried the same stunt and lost in court.
They actually had an internal recall # for the door latches, but it was nixed, when the execs realized it would cost Ford $527 Million!
There has been at least 2 deaths and a lawsuit related to that death with an undisclosed cash settlement for that lawsuit on Ampril 21 (of this year?) and there are at least 15 other lawsuits pending. A South Carolina law firm, Motley Rice LCC, is trying to organize a class action lawsuit. Another Class Action lawsuit was filed on March 5th in US District Court in Texarkana, TX.
Well there it is!!!!
There were a fair share more details in the article about how the company knew about the problem, how they started to recall, then stopped. There was info about people, who were injured, etc....
comment?

I saw that article, but it was about the F150 only, extended cab models with the third door or newer third door. What they fail mention is that all third door trucks are inheret to this problem when they roll over and suffer major roof damage. The trouble is that their is no B pilar for roof strenght and can allow the roof to crush far enough that the door latches release. I read the Free Press everyday and saw nothing that mentioned the Nav, Expy or F250.
If you follow the the Free Press very much you will notice they for some reason have a hard on for Ford, notice there was no other mention of any other brand of truck, but some searching will reveal that all third door and four door ex- cabs are prone to this problem.
Sled...

irrelevance
third door and no B-pillar?
Except that the problem is not the system, but that the Latch, which holds the doors is supposed to pass the Federal Safety Spec and it doesn't. Period.
Now, if it fails during a roll over or something that damages the roof, that is another story.
Here is a link to one of the class action lawsuit after a short search on Google.

Just so you know...
As to the Free Press... well if there was a better paper w/ local news, I probably would buy it.

I have also read Ford's position. They say that the latches passed all government crash testing critreria.
The question becomes, how severe were the crashes? Like with the Crown Victoria gas tanks. The ones that exploded were hit at 75+MPH, which is enought to explode many tanks.
How much are we willing to pay for vehicles that remain 100% perfect in 75+mph crashes? Or rollovers due to driver negligence?
Our vehicles are so expensive now due to the added safety crap because some people don't know how to drive.
