I have a '97, the dealership tells me there is a leak around the windshield causing the electrical problem which is wipers don't work, dome light doesn't work, seatbelt light remains on etc., etc.
My question is why does it leak in the first place and is there a product I can use myself to seal it and will last?

 

I would like an answer as well. My rear windshield leaks so bad the seat gets soaked every time it rains. I have been told that the whole unit has to be replaced, and yes I have door ajar lights that stay on too long, as well as the dome light and light over the rear windshield. I think the leak can be fixed with silicone caulk, but I am reluctant to try it unless someone else tells me they had success.

As far as the windshield leak goes, the difficult part is finding the leak. Water may be leaking onto the fuse block under the dash.
Some have been lucky enough to find it a seal it themselves, but some have had to take their vehicles to a glass shop to let them find the leak as well as sealing it. You can buy small tubes of windshield sealant at your local parts stores.

Your problems are easily repaired. For the rear window leak, replace the entire window if the frame is cracked. If not, you can probably get by with just replacing the gasket yourself. I tried the silicone myself, but it didn't work and looked lousy.
For the lights staying on, you need to saturate the door switches which are inside the fwd door jamb with WD-40 and open/close the doors several times during the process. This should take care of your lighting problems.
