Question slots on the roof

I just got my 1997 F150 and I noticed that on the roof there are two slots that run from front to back on the roof. What are they there for? Are they there for a roof rack or to help keep rain off?

Just like kingfish mentioned, they're rain gutters...

Although they ACT as rain gutters, they're actually the joint between the roof panel and the side body panels. When you hide them up there on the roof, the joint does not have to be cosmetically perfect - as it would if it were done the old way. Couldn't see the old joints? That's because so much work (and cost) went into smoothing them. If you look at most late model cars, you'll see the same thing - instead of the old joint at the top of the C pillar.
