Need to get roof repainted!

About a month or so ago I noticed that there were a few small spots on the top of my roof where the clear coat was missing. I don't know why I didn't notice it the first time I washed my truck, but I had the truck in the dealer for an oil change--and had them look at a it. Warrantly will cover it, but the body shop says they'll have to sand and repaint the entire roof, which will take about a week.

I'm kind of worried about having the roof repainted, but I know it needs to be done. Have any of you guys had this or any kind of major repaint done on your trucks? How'd it look?

If I can get a loaner out of the dealer for the time being, I'll probably do it this month or next... just wanted to hear experiences from others...

My dad owns an auto body repair shop, and probably the most common fear from customers is "will the paint match?" and probably the most common compliment he hears is "that paint looks perfect!"

As long as the shop is a good one, you shouldn't have anything to fear, and in the case of some vehicles your new paint will be more durable and more evenly coated than the factory finish - obviously, this is the case with your vehicle. Also, any good shop should have a paint-match guarantee.

My old car and my wife's car (both early 90's models) both have flaking clear coat on the roof and in some places on the hood. I asked dad about that once (figuring it was due to my failure to keep the cars constantly waxed/washed) and he said automakers are always fiddling with clear coat finishes, and especially in the early 90's there was a long run of bad clear coats on american-made autos and that's why today you'll see a lot of those vehicles with flaking clear coats. I know your truck is new, but obviously there was still some kind of defect in the paint/clear process and a new paint job will make you feel a lot better than leaving it like it is.

And, of course, anyone in this forum will still demand that you treat your new finish with a quality wax/sealant to keep it looking good as long as possible.

Good luck!

this might scare you BUT........ when my black 01 was new i found "bad" paint on hood and on roof. ford had to repaint both. to make it worse, i drove by the shop when it was bare metal(not a pretty picture). while working on the roof, somehow sides got scratched and windows got glazed and buffed which didnt come out until i made them replace 2 rear windows. found overspray and primer, and thousands of swirls where new paint had to be buffed which didnt look like factory. took it back 5 times, by now truck was not new, i fought them but they would not replace entire truck(of course). this body shop usually does excellent work. we were not impressed.
