Exclamation Tailgate locks itself!

I know it sounds strange but it's true. After opening and closing it a couple times the locking mechanism engages itself. It also does this when traveling over bumpy terrain. Best I can figure is that there's something loose in there. The key works fine but I'm worried that it might not the next time. How hard is it to get inside to troubleshoot it? Any ideas what might be causing this? Anyone else have the same experience? Enjoy the holiday weekend!

It is very easy to get to just remove the steel inspection cover at the top of the tailgate held inplace by 8 torx head bolts. You will be able to see the lock mechanism and inside of the tailgate handle, both are held inplace by 2 bolts, remove these bolts and you will notice a spring retainer that fits in a slot on the lock, this my need a little more spring tension to keep the lock from moving on its own

Cool

Hey there, mine tailgate doesn't lock itself, but after putting it up, it is a bear to get down agian, seems like there is something sticking or something like that. I actually wonder if I haven't twisted the box a little bit from offroading with it, and that has caused the tailgate to be hard to open....seems like it is locked though, everyone has a hard time opening it the first time, until I tell them to just give it a hard yank and then it opens..

MNFord, do you have a spray-in bedliner? There were some links earlier regarding some liner getting in between the gate and the bed causing tension that prevented the gate from unlatching smoothly.

Lightbulb

I have the tailgate-sticking problem on my 97 F150 supercab. Take a look at the Nader pins that the tailgate locks into.. on mine, the one on the right side had the plastic collar around the pin shredded all to bits. I turned it around so the shredded part faced forward and the good part contacted the latch, and it worked OK until it worked its way around rearward again. I'm figuring replacing the pin (and plastic collar) will fix the sticky tailgate problem.

still there!! someone tried to swipe mine
last night.....Thank heavens I was backed in over a curb, they couldn't get it
low enough to get the hanger loose.
