Door crack problem
I just bought a 98 F150 XLT sc with 25k miles. Then I found this site (a great site). My drivers door also has the famous sheet metal crack. What is the latest from Ford on this product defect?
So far I have expressed my concern to the 800 # listed in the F150 on-line article about this problem. I have also contacted three local Ford dealers. Two of them claimed no knowledge of the problem (Right!). The third said they would have to look at it and if it was in the 3/36 wtty. they would have a local body shop "do their best" to fix it.
I urge EVERYONE with the problem to contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673. They will record you complaint along with VIN etc.

There are many of us here (majority) that have the door cracks, and it has been discussed many times about the cracks. There is no fix at this time, and doesn't appear that there will be one anytime soon. Ford knows about it, and is just sitting there waiting for enough people to complain. Well we have been heard, as I was instructed by a regional ford engineer (service specialty) but there still is no fix.
If you look, there are a lot of other posts on the same thing...just do a search on the topic!!!

I talked to an engineer for Ford who shall remain nameless, and he said they finally have a fix that holds up in the field. All Previous 'fixes' had failed and were driving them bonkers.
The fix is real new and the dealers might not about it know yet.
I will post what this fix is (even though I know it now) when my favorite dealer gets his info on it. I want to talk to someone I can quote first, and confirm what the engineer said.
btw, he also said while it won't be a recall, if you are out of warrenty, and you complain, the dealer should fix it free anyway just to please the customer.
So to give hope to the masses, I will tell you that FORD DOES KNOW AND THEY HAVE BEEN DILIGENTLY WORKING ON IT!

Here are some facts:
1) It is a design flaw. Every door will crack. If you're rough, sooner, if you baby it, later.
2) Ford has known about it for a long time. They thought they had a fix a year ago but, they over-fixed it and broke window regulators.
3) They do have a fix that works, just recently proven. The fix IS a preventative fix. If you already have the crack, you need a repair AND the preventative fix. The problem now is we're talking about 6 million doors.
4) The dealers don't know about it yet. Thus, the frustration for everyone. Yes, the dealer may repair or replace your door but, without the preventative fix, you'll be back.
Ford can't announce the fix when they only have a few prototypes on the shelf. They need time to gear up for the tremendous demand and every F150 will need it from '97 to '01. I'm sure the first place these 'fixes' will go is to the assembly line.
(If I say 'patience' will anybody beat me up?)

If we wait for ford to own up, the warranty will run out, then what? and since this IS a design flaw, why not a loaner car?

TexasSport,
Keep your pants on and reread Dustoff's post.
To help you and I quote "it won't be a recall, if you are out of warranty, and you complain, the dealer should fix it free anyway just to please the customer". Unfortunately, there is no 'CLASS' in a CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT. Besides, those lawyers have enough money. I'm also sure GM would appreciate the business.

I want to thank those who replied to my post. I have read everything I can find regarding this problem. Here is another way to voice our concerns to Ford. Go to www.ownerconnection.com and register yourself and your vehicle. After you register, go the "contact" button and email Ford about this problem. I will do just that today and include a link to this site. We MUST beat Ford up over this if we expect anything to be done. For those that are concerned about their warranty running out. Go to the dealer and complain about the problem. Make absolutely sure that an entry is made into their warranty log AND get a copy for yourself! Lastly, keep spreading the word. There are a lot of owners that will be equally upset once they know the problem exists.

Thanks, dang!
I jumped over to ownerconnection.com and registered. Then I e-mailed and complained about my door cracks and rust. I don't know what good it will do, but if enough people complain you never know........

I had my F-150 delivered 3 July 00. Any chance that the door crack problem had been fixed by then? Or is the fix relatively new. Mine came from the Norfolk, VA plant

Ponysix,
I couldn't disagree more. Running lights that don't work compared to cracks in the sheet metal? This BB (and others) lists hundreds of complaints about cracks in the doors, roof line, and rusted sheet metal seams on low mileage, late model trucks. We are not talking about Escorts here. Some of these vehicles cost upwards of $35K ! Ford can make a decision to come clean with their customers or expect to lose some of them to their competition.

I like the new term "Shakerados"!
Shuvy Shakerados
Update: I read most(all) of the owner stories at the above link and I can't believe how bad the new Chevy/GMC is! We have our own problems with the F-150..but I don't think they are nearly as bad as theirs. I'll take a door crack
any day over a defective frame design or defective rims and faulty transmissions in a shakerado!
