1st Door Cracks!! Now This!?!? Please Read & Reply!!!
Hey All you door crack F150 owners~
While I was waxing my truck & smokin crack today, I noticed some strange paint cracks on my roof!(Jus kiddin about the smokin crack by the way for any **** retentive people) Anyway, I was waxing the roof and noticed long cracks thru the paint of the rain gutter channels on top of my roof. The cracks appear to go thru the paint, from the rear of the channel all the way to the front of the channel on both sides of my truck on both sides of each channel. The best way for you to understand what I'm talking about might be to get in your truck bed and take a close look at your rain gutter sections. Mine are about 2 or 3 inches in from the sides. I dont know if those are metal stress cracks or just paint cracks! Either way, it should not be happening!!! Any feedback from fellow F150 owners who also happen to be paint and body experts would definately be appreciated!!! Please, everyone tell me what you think and if you find it on your trucks also?!?! I wonder if there is another metal stress crack happening besides the door cracks!?!?

Yup. It's a problem that's almost as old as the door crack. I recall that there's a fix for it. Check with your dealer about it.
I'm on my second late model F-150 and have not experienced either the rain gutter or door crack problems.

Yep..my 98 had them.
It is evidently caused by thin areas of clearcoat. The factory did not apply enough in the channel gutter. A repaint and new clearcoat will solve this problem.

Did anyone have the new paint/clearcoat put on to fix the cracks (did they come back)?
My truck has them, the former owner (thanks Tina!) put some sealer over them, so I haven't seen them getting worse.

cigarXTC and spartan,
The cracks in the rain gutters are common it is not thin clear coat causing the problem. I the channel there is what they call"flexible seam sealer" It is made to be fexible because it is where two pieces of metal are welded together.THis seals that from leaking. What is happening is that it is flexing in the corners of rain channels and the paint is cracking. They can repaint it but they will appear again. Not a big worr thought. the seam sealer does not rust so you chould have no problems leaving it alone.

I noticed mine the day AFTER I drove it home last December. (1997 model) The dealer took care of it and did a great job. Not just paint. It needs the flex stuff in the channel dug out and taken down to bare metal, the flex stuff replaced, then painted and clear coated. They baked it in a nice long time. No problems since.
I have a 97 with cracks in the paint over the entire surface. I was told by a PPG rep that Ford used a water based primer and it never dried properly. The paint needs to be stripped and start over. Ford decline to help with the cost. Last Ford I buy.

Did you take it to a different dealer? Are you out of warranty? If so, how long? My '97, bought December 99, had the cracks. The dealer did not hesitate to fix them. I was just ticked that they would not give a loaner while it was in the shop because I had only bought it two days earlier. They give loaners at the service department but not the body shop.
