Cool A nice touch

Hello all!

I did something the other night to the front end of our 99 XLT 4X4 SC, FS that exceeded expectations.

Since our truck is black (and it would look nice on any colour), the plastic grey lower section of the bumper looked so....um....tacky. So, after cleaning it up, I taped it off and sprayed it with a gloss black, then a clear lacquer. It adds an "expensive look"..though I don't have pictures right now, they will eventually be here.

It's amazing what you can do with a can of spraypaint!

I agree that anything to get rid of that grey plastic look is a big plus. One thing to look out for though: If you didn't prep the plastic perfectly and didn't use a flex agent in your paint, you will most likely see that work you did flake off after a short time.........

Selva1's right. SEM (brand name) has the corner on the market for vinyl and plastic-surface paints. I think they're available in aerosal cans, too. The existing paint has to be sanded and primed with an 'etch' coat for the paint to stick, and the paint you spray has to have a flexible parts additive to let the paint 'flex' with the plastic parts.

Talking

I also painted my lower part black, not me
the bumper,,,, it was supposed to be blk
and had a run in with some underpass
grey bridge paint overspray..looks real good now. As long as the paint is kept
very thin you won't have to many problems
with it flaking.

You hit it on the head about the prep for painting plastic. Believe me, I did a little research first and even tried a hidden area first.

It's still snug!

the prep of plastic and the flex agent in the paint are critical.I had (dare I say it)a chevy beretta gt that I did some painting on and those nice plastic bumpers were a pain to get the paint to stick to.3 attempts later that paint isn't coming off.
