I have on my 98 F150 XLT its pretty easy I think the 97 and 98 door assembly is pretty much the same. You have to take off the door panel to get to the screws to release the the mirror. When I bought some speakers from crutchfield they included a how-to on taking off the door panels if you give me your e-mail I could scan them and send them to you.

Thanks for responding. I have already replaced my speakers so I am familiar with removing the door panel. Does the outside cover (the one that matches the color of the truck) just pull off? Is there an easy way to get it off? Thanks

I misunderstood your question. But yeah they do come off but it's a real pain to do so. What you have to do is tilt the mirror down as far as it will go then with a pretty long screw driver find the two tabs(4 total) and with the screw driver carefully press plastic tabs up until they come off the clip a push them back. Then tilt the mirror towards the door window and look for the other one this one you have to pry in the opposite direction of the window and push back. The last one is the hardest you have to point the mirror away from the window and look for the last one(it helps to have the window rolled down)this one you have to pry down and push back and this should remove the cover. You also have to remember to keep the tabs from snapping back on when trying to remove the cover. The easy part is putting it back on just line up the tabs with the slots and press until you hear all four tabs snap back. Hope this helps, it can be done but it takes some patience.
