Question Locking Tailgate - the Next Generation

The tailgate on my 97 XLT extend cab locks every time I close it, and I have to use the key to unlock it. It's not been too bad with my Tonneau cover; however, I would prefer that it not do that. Does anyone know how I could easily correct this issue?

Thanks,

Talking

Drive with the tailgate down.

Seriously, do you know for sure that it's really locked? My '99 tailgate mechanism seems 'stiff' sometimes. I push and tug on the tailgate with my free hand till it opens because I know I didn't lock it.
Next time, I'll try sticking the key in and find out if it's trying to lock itself as yours does.

Question

Yes, I am sure that it locks. The handle comes forward with no resistance. Once I place the key in, it resumes working.

I appreciate your humor, though.

Raoul, i had the same problem my tail gate would not open when i would pull the handle and it wasnt locked. Come to find out it was my spray in liner interfering with the locks. if its still under warranty take it in and let them look at it thats what i had to do. they trimmed it down a little on the tail gate.

I got sprayed a week after I got the truck and I think that's when the tailgate started sticking.
I just can't add two and two, thanks!

No spray in liner here, just recycled milk jug plastic...the last few months or so my tailgate handle has been acting like it was locked too. I rarely lock it on my 97 F150.

After finally GETTING it open and watching the catches barely go in and out when tugging on the handle when open, I sprayed a generous amount of WD-40 on those catches, and voila doesn't catch or "pretend" to be locked at all.

Miracle juice that WD-40....wonder if it will help on my aching joints?

Thanks F-150 Guy. Did you WD 40 the catches under the handle? Did you have to remove anything like your bedliner? Or did you get the catches on each end? Sorry if the question is naive.

Regards,
