fog light question...

Wasn't sure where to post this, so sorry...

I searched, but since fog is less than the 4 letter limit I may have missed something. I was just curious if anyone knows of an aftermarket replacement for the XLT fog lights that has a clear/crystal/euro lens? I want to eventually put on clear lens headlights (like the Lightning), and not sure how they'll look with the factory fog lights if/when I get them added...

and if not, could someone with the XLT fog lights give me some pretty accurate dimensions on the lenses? please?

I've searched for something to replace them myself with no luck whatsoever.

As for the dimensions, it's going to be a tough measurement to take as they are oblong and odd ball shaped.

I know that's not much info but, just thought I'd let you know that I've tried to find a lens assembly that would work with no success...

Thanks for the heads up Mike.

To post a link, simply highlight and right click on the area that you've highlighted (from the address bar in Internet Explorer or AOL (whichever you're using). Then choose copy once the menu appears after right clicking.

Come over to this window and hit CTRL-V and it will paste the address into the text field in which you type your response. It's VERY easy. Hope that helps out a little...

I wasn't able to come up with the clear fogs that we were discussing... all I could find was a set of used OEM fogs...

One important thing you might want to think about first is exactly what you want your lights to do. There are different types of lights that do different things. For instance, FOG lights are designed to have a very flat beam that goes a short distance out and out to the sides around 135 degrees. The idea is to project out and under fog. Fog lights don't allow you to see further down the road.

DRIVING lights are generally designed with a narrower beam that goes further down the road. They don't project much out to the sides at all. They're designed to penetrate further. Note that this is fundamentally different than a fog light.

Your headlights are designed as a compromise because you generally need a bit of both patterns. That's also why folks offer aftermarket lighting to fill in the gaps. (No pun intended.)

Now for my real point. All lighting depends on something to re-direct the light. The fluted lens in a fog light focuses it in that wide / flat pattern. The other way to get that pattern is to have a clear lens and a fluted reflector. Yes, we all love that clear lens look, but you have to make sure your're getting the beam pattern you want too - unless of course all you're looking for is the "cool factor." I like lights that look cool too, but I'm really looking for specific beam patterns so I can see certain areas of the road in front of me. Hope that helps!

Well, actually the low wide pattern is what I'm looking for, especially with the high beams... I want something to help light the sides of the road close to me... and the cool factor doesn't hurt any either...

I hope that worked. If it did check those lights out and see if they are what you are looking for.

I saw them just browsing and thought they looked cool.

closer9,

OK, if you want the light out to the sides, you're talking a fog light pattern. You can get this pattern easily with a fluted lens, but it doesn't have that cool / clear lens look. You can also get the pattern with a properly designed reflector behind a clear lens, but it's much harder to do. Since it appears you already have the factory fogs, maybe you just want to re-wire them so they come on with your high beams? The only mod I've heard for increasing the output of the factory fogs is a swap out of bulbs for a 9005 - which can be made to fit with a minor timming job. I know of no aftermarket light that fits in the factory slot that has a clear lens / fog pattern. Does that help?

I currently have no fog lights... I recently got the XLT valance, and wiring harness, but have yet to locate a set of fog lights... was hoping someone made the clear ones for 99-03 like the ones for the 97-98, but anymore I'd settle for a cheap set of factory lights with brackets... I will be wiring them to come on with both high and low beams...

Actually, the 97-98 factory fogs used a fluted lens to distribute the light just like the newer models. (The older lights did it a hell of a lot better I might add.) I have a slightly used 99 & newer right side fog light assembly (lens & reflector - no bracket) down in the basement. If you can't hunt down a set, I'm sure I can part with that one for pretty cheap. Remember, you also have the option I used available to you. I stuck a set of lights behind my grill. This option only works for driving beams though because the grill seriously screws up the fog pattern.

Hey, thanks, B-Man...

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do... I was kind of hoping to find a cheap used set that was in good shape, but so far no luck. I am watching a "new" set on ebay for a about $50 a piece... May end up doing that... I finally got my harness all put together tonight, just need to find a place to hide/mount the switch. Then install the harness, and cut some wires down...

2stroked, what I meant abuot finding a set like the 97-98 clear/euros was that there is a company making those for the 97-98, and even though they look like the same light (different bracket) I hear they aren't...

I can tell you for sure that they're different lights - with different bulbs too. Too bad, the older ones worked much better than the new ones.

closer9,

What kind of wiring harness did you get? I installed a set of foglights on my truck and still haven't wired them up. I haven't had any luck finding directions on how to hook them up. I bought the wiring harness from Ford and also bought a new headlight switch.

Anybody know where I can the information for the Ford add on wiring harness?

Thanks,
AJ
