Angry "Cat on the roof"

Friends,

Does anyone know of a humane way to protect one's high gloss finish from those pesky outdoor felines?
For you pet lovers out there, "is there a spray or something to deter them from resting on the hood or roof without ruining the finish?"

Any advise?

Is your truck parked in a fairly secure place? There's a product called a Scat Mat, I believe it's called. It's a plastic mat with a wire grid on it that will "zap" a pet when it steps on the mat. It's a high voltage low amperage system. Sort of like a mild electric fence. The animal will feel it, but it won't harm them.

After a cat gets zapped a couple of times, it won't go back and you can remove the mat until a different cat finds your truck.

Park on a brick - and wax your roof -- worked for me.

Use the water hose on the cat. I had the same problem with a local dog pissing (happened several times) on my tires right in front of me. Instead of using the dog as a football, I used the hose and now he doesn't even step on my driveway.

I was gonna post antifreeze but he did say humane and after watching my dog die from that a couple of years ago, I can tell you it is anything but humane.
Day 1. Dog digs under fence and drinks antifreeze that was left out for pesky cats. Vet says they may be able to IV ethanol to try to stop it, not very likely though. That night dog becomes increasingly lethargic.
Day 2 dog shows lack of coordination in the morning, stumbling around. By noon her walking had become difficult, and she appeared to have become blind not following movement but sounds. By 3pm she wasn't walking at all and on the way to have her put down, she goes into convulsions.

Not at all humane for a seven year old member of the family.
I don't like cats either, but I wouldn't wish that death on anyone.

Thank you friends,

I will surely try every suggestion except the anti-freeze.

Will let you know how this turns out.

Ever see the ads for the "invisable pet fence"? It works using super high frequency ultrasound to stop your pets from leaving your yard. If it will keep pets in your yard, I would think it could keep them out too.

Boss, the Invisible Fence is actually an antenna wire you bury around the outside edges of your property. The dog wears a collar that buzzes when it gets close to the wire. When it gets too close, it sends a shock to the dog thru the collar.

What you're talking about is an ultrasonic pest repeller and I wish I had thought about that. You can find some electronic pest repellers that will work on dogs and cats and they're designed for outdoor use. The last place I recall seeing one is in the Northern Hydraulics catalog.

Enok, I sure hope you were joking because what you're suggesting is cruel and will kill ANYTHING that injests the antifreeze, including neighborhood children. Not likely to happen, but it can and has happened. Besides, leaving antifreeze out is illegal in many areas. It contributes to the smog problem.

Slvrsteed,

I don't know if there's a zoo nearby, but some zoos sell(!) lionsh*t. As I recall, you can even get it trucked(!) to you. It's supposed to run off deer, cats and dogs and damn near everything on four legs with a decent nose to the wind.

I've seen some sprays at the vets for repelling animals, but never paid much attention to them. Dunno if they'll work outdoors, where the scent would die pretty quickly, I'd assume.

Sorry to read about your dog A4C -- poisons always seem to hit the wrong target.

I'm open for options for pesky mice here in the house -- have birds and dogs -- won't use poisons (birds spend almost as much time on the floor as on/in their cages) -- and the plastic 'tar-pit' has only caught one (and there's a partially-bald one running around, heh heh).

Dennis,

I was thinking that was the ultrasonic thing. Guess I had a brain fart. Anyway, I've seen some of them and they work pretty good. I would definitely try it, they aren't that expensive.

Y2K, the glue traps are probably the best to use. I see from your post that you haven't had much luck with them. You have to place them along baseboards because that's where the mice run. They rarely run in the open, prefering to run along walls, boxes, etc. That's where you need to place the glue traps. It also helps if you don't handle the traps with your bare hands. You can also try baiting the traps. Coconut works well. Nuts work too.

Poison works well too. Exterminators use this blue wax block things. The mice and rats eat it. Then they get thirsty and die when they drink water. I've seen these things used all over the place and I haven't seen any dead birds or dogs in the areas.

Boss, no biggy. I can empathize with you. The older I get the more brain farts I suffer from.

Cool

A car cover or garage work really well.
