Question Bed to cab alignment ???

Hey all,

I am looking at buying a 2000 4x4 Supercab. The truck looks like it is is great shape inside and out, however one thing is bothering me.

If you inspect the truck from the rear (looking along the side of the bed towards the cab), you can see that the bed is more flush with the cab door on the drivers side, then it is on the passengers side. It actually looks like the bed is off center by about 1/4" where it meets the cab.
I think I have seen this before on F150's but I don't know if this is normal or not. Is it a bed alignment issue or a door alignment issue? The dealer say it's just how it was made, can be fixed but would be a lot of trouble.

Carfax is completely clean on this truck and the frame looks clean so I think their being honest with regards to any structural issues.

What do you folks think?

My previous Truck('00 F150) was the same way. Also the Bumpers(Frt. & Rear) were also out of alignment. Those I had realigned. But, for the bed they aligned it as close as they could. Wasn't really that noticable, just part of having a mass-produced vehical. They're not going to be totally perfect.

Buy asking the dealership to try to align it as best as they can before I buy it, do you think I am asking much? I read another post that made me think it should take less then an hour.

It never hurts to ask..........Just don't get your hopes up on it being perfect.

habenero, welcome to the boards! I would definitely tell them to align the bed with the cab the best they could, just to see what kind of effort that the dealer would put forth to correct a problem for you. Better to find out before you own the truck than after!

Seems like the dealer does not want to touch it. I spoke with the service manager and he explained that it is about as good as it is going to get due to where ford drills the hold and how the the bed mounts work (being octaganal). he explained there is usually no room really for side to side adjustment and that he gets a lot of complaints about this, but that is what Ford deems as acceptable for fit and finish on a commercial vehicle.

The bed seemed to be evenly spaced away from the cab in a front to back direction, it's just that in the transition from the doors to the bed its more flush on one side then on the other. I have been looking at all the f150 's i see on the street and many seem similar. I will be re-examining tomorrow to see how far it is really off, i.e. 1/4" or more or less (hopefully)

There is definitely enough play to align your bed. I had mine done
and it was off about half an inch. It took the tech all of 10
minutes to do it.

Thanks for the help guys. I do all my own repairs normally when my equipment will allow, (brakes, cooling systems, ingition, audio, intakes, exhaust, OBDII computers, etc) so I think I might give this a crack myself. I just dont see why if it's so easy they wouln't do it. They seem to be great to deal with in every other regard and after this purchase they will not be my local dealer....fustrating

Oh well.. my first Ford, and first truck - finally.

Well I went back to look at the truck and the bed alignment was not as bad as I had thought. Maybe about 3/16" on the passenger side.

So... I picked her up!!! 2000 22K miles, 5.4, 4x4, Lariat, leather, ARE tonneau, deep wedgewood blue metalic. Excellent interior. No rust, no door cracks.

F-150

I'm new to this forum but check out my thread on fordtruckworld:

Dealer fixed the problem so that it is more even on both sides. It does **** me off that such a defect would be possible from ford.

On every F150 I see I always look at the alignement between the cab and the bed....You'd be amazed at all the crooked beds that are out there!

here is a pic of my bed before they fixed it.

I just returned from the dealer as I took my truck in this morning to have the box re-aligned. The driver's side was in about 1/4" more than the passenger side. They loosened the bolts and managed to get it over but it still isn't the same as the pass side. It's still out by maybe 1/8".

It's weird because the pass side looks like it hasn't changed much, maybe by a 1/16". They said that's all they could get out of it because of the alignment guides. They also said most F-150's have that problem but it varies from truck to truck.

Have to live with it I guess????
