Signal Side mirrors
I'm interested in converting my XLT side mirrors to the Signal Mirror where the arrow flashes in the glass when the turn signal operates. This is Part # 17K707. Ford advises dealer installation.
Anybody with these mirrors have any bad experience? Anybody install them themselves? Advice?

Iu havent done my own but I have done others. With the signal already there. All the signal is is a series of lights that are on the inside of the mirror. The mirror is passive and the light goes through it. From what I understand is that the kit comes with a new mirror and backing plate. The plate in yours now is solid. The new one will have a cut out for the signal. You will have to break out your mirror. They are glued in and are a pain to save. Then with the glass gone you will see where they attach. It is possable to remove the plate with the glass still in one piece. but if you pull it wrong you can break some of the other stuff in there. That you dont want. most of the parts are not replacable. They make you buy a whole new head. It is easier and safer to break the old mirror out.
The only other hting is that you will have to wire it in. This takes a little splicing and you will have to remove the doorpanel to run the wires. It will take about 3+ hours if you have never done any of this before.
If you do get it I can tell you how to do all but the wiring. I wont know which are which. But those are on the instructions.

Ditto on what Franks&Beans says, you probably can do it yourself. I did mine in about 4 hours (3 hours on the 1st mirror, due to being EXTRA careful, 1 hour on the 2nd mirror)
I suggest buying them from the online store, I think its cheaper then through Ford. Take your time, and you should have no trouble. I didn't break any glass, and if I were to ever have to go back to the original mirrors, I could.
One note - you don't mention what year your truck is. The instructions for the MUTH mirrors state it is for the 1998-1999 model, but they are really for the 1998 model. In 1999, the door panels were changed, and they don't indicate this change in the instructions. That is the only variation between the 2 model years as far as installation goes.
Good luck!

Like they all said, piece of cake after the first one. I did mine (98) and sport2000-Fred's (20) and they both took about 4 hours total (sorry Chris, I am a fast learner). The hardest part for me was popping the old mirror off (center pop circle thingy), I was afraid I would break the glass. the second hardest was popping the new one on, the same center popping thingy. Then everything else just plugged in..putting the blow dryer on high on the center of the back mirror made the install easier, make the pop thing easier....Dave
