Preventing tailgate theft.
A buddy of mine had the tailgate stolen from his 99 F-150. His mechanic suggested (after the fact of course) that he have someone drop the bumper, remove the tailgate, switch the left and right posts, put the tailgate back on, and put the bumper back. Does this make since? Would it cause any problems?

Why not just keep the tailgate locked?

If he has a lock, I would suggest using it. But not all trucks come with the tailgate lock. Switching the hing mounts although it may irritate whomever took it, they will not know it has been switched untill after it's been taken. Then they could switch it back and still use it. I would invest in either an aftermarket lock or buy the factory kit.

Some of the Ch$vy guys are using a small radiator screw type clamp installed over the hinge with the slot. This will slow the thief down or confuse him.

As Dewayne had stated in his message, if you get a hose clamp, and put it around the hinge that has the opening , they wont be able to take it so easily. You could scres on the clamp, and then cut off the head of the clamp so that they can screw it back off. Its not a full proof plan, but its alot better than having nothing. My tailgate doesn't have a lock, so that's what i did. Hope this helps you guys.

I thought all of the newer F150's came with a tailgate lock? My 97 XL had one. Well, just lock the tailgate, that should help.
