No only the drivers side but one door is enough, they both had reg cab, mine is a ext cab , do more reg cab crack than the ext cab with the extra doors?

They seem to all crack about the same whether its an s/c or reg. There are 3 ford dealers around my area. I went to all to ck out the used trucks for cracks 18 of 23 were cracked. Some up to 1/2inch.

So I purchase a used 97 F250 XCab about a month ago because the truck had low miles on it (23K), it was in great shape and the price was right. Feeling real good about the truck and start reading these forums.
Last night, I went out and checked and I have the door cracks on both sides and have already experienced the door ajar syndrome. I haven't heard the piston slap yet but I'll keep listening.
Now the question, given that the original warranty is going to run out on time first before miles, what do I need to do now to make sure that I can have the door cracks fixed, the door ajar problem cured, ... while I'm still under warranty? Also since I didn't buy it from a Ford Dealership but instead from a Chevy Dealership, do I need to go to a Ford Dealership to have the fixes made? Does anyone have copies of the applicable TSBs (or TSB Numbers) so I can carry them along with me. I can picture it now, I talk to the Service Guy and tell him that the door ajar stays on sometimes (but is working now), the doors have cracks in them (but they just look like scratches), ....

You are correct, on my 2000 I can see a bent/curve/stress (?) area where all the cracks start. On my friends 97 the same spot is just flat (well, beside the crack). Maybe Ford 'prestressed' the door skins now? I also get zero flex when running the windows up and down. There is still some movement when I slam the door shut though. I'll keep an eye on it for the next few years.

You need to go to a Ford Dealer to get any problems fixed under warranty. I don't have the TSB numbers on me, but if you look under older topics I have posted them.

Have the dealer look up the "Special Service Message 13238". It deals directly w/ the door crack.

Well I went to the local Ford dealership the other evening and out of about 20 s/c ranging from '97 to 99 I'd say 15 had door cracks. None on the passenger side so I am assuming the passenger door metal must be created out of a different die. They had 3 '00 model s/c trucks but none had cracks. I plan on buying a new truck next fall so I hope Ford has this fixed. Since the hwy dept uses every known chemical to keep the snow/ice off the roads in winter here in Wisconsin any exposed metal would probably guarantee me a rusty door in a heartbeat. If this problem isn't remedied then I guess it's hello Toyota Tundra. But I would rather have a Ford.

Does anyone know what the Message (13238) says about the repair??? The dealer is about to weld my door cracks and if another method is desirable I'd like to know. Ford has been reluctant to let me see the Message. They say they can't find it!!!

I have 47,000 miles on my truck and just had my door crack fixed. I went to the dealer and showed them the crack and they said that they would fix it for $100 deductible since it was out of warranty. ($100 deductible will fix anything on truck after warranty is up to a certain point if it is a manufacturer defect.) Later on that day I took him a print out of the door crack article on the bottom of the F-150 online homepage. He then said he will check on some more and get back to me. The next day the body shop guy called and said to bring it in and they would do it at no charge. Well I got it done before they changed their mind and it looks great.

It can go either way here. Some had it repaired and had problems, others had it replaced and the same thing. Ford apparently reuses things like the weatherstripping, etc. If not taken off right, you have problems, air leaks, water leaks, no rock guard or clearcoat, plus it's the same door going on that cracked in the first place. I had mine repaired rather than replaced. Mine was welded, a stiffener plate made and glued in the door and patch painted. It came out super.
Good Luck

THERE IS A FIX!!!!!
I just was called by my dealer and there is a reinforcement kit for this crack. They will fix it and put the kit inside. I pushed hard enough for a loaner car also. Everything is free.. my truck has 35500 miles and almost at 36,000 and they are covering it. FULL WARRANTY.
This is in the ford computers so EVERY DEALER SHOULD KNOW about this. I SAW THE PRINTOUT AND EVERYTHING. Get your truck fixed now!

White Knight,
A TSB or additional info would be great! Are all 97-00 trucks to be fixed? I am not sure that the 2000's had the door problem corrected..so I want to get the kit before any cracks develop.
Thanks for the heads-up!!
