Unhappy I keep getting SHOCKED!

Hello! I keep getting shocked when I get out of my Truck. I am 5'5", so I guess I kinda "sliiiiide" out of it, maybe that's the problem. But my husb. is 5'10" and he gets shocked, too! And he doesn't "slide" out. We don't get shocked until we touch ANY metal, even if we touch the rubber trim on the door - ZAP! Any thoughts?

Well they used to sell straps that hang from the frame and would touch the ground, in effect giving a path to get rid of any 'charge' in a vehicle. Check out your local autoparts store and see what they have if anything. Good Luck

Claudia,

I'm 6' and get shocked as well! These trucks don't discriminate based on height or gender!

A little secret that works for me is to grab the metal on the door as you step onto the ground! What's happening is the static electricity that builds in your body and the truck due to the cold weather is seeking a path to ground. That path is you! If you step onto the ground first, the connection is made through bare skin, either your hand or finger, both are sensitive to the shock. By grabbing the door first, the connection is then made between your shoe and the ground! You don't feel it because that little arc of electricity jumps from your shoe to the ground, not your flesh through you to ground!

Give it a try and see if it works for you!

Claudia,

Like PaulT, I am over 6' and was constantly shocking myself getting out. Can't get rid of the problem without adding the grounding straps as mentioned, but when I exit, I drag my right leg along the running board until I touch the ground, this allows for the discharge without the ZAP we all love.

I noticed that nobody has leather seats (no Lariats in signatures). I went from a Mustang GT with leather to my F-150 with cloth and was surprised the first time that I got shocked. My wife's car has leather seats and I never get shocked whn getting out of it. I guess it is like when I was a kid and used to run around in socks and scuff my feet just so I could shock my brother.

I talked to my dealer about this because my Ranger was doing this to me and my girlfriend. He said that a good way to combat the problem is to either wad up a dryer sheet and stick it under the seat, or to spray the seat with anti-static spray once in a awhile. He said the shock is normal, and is caused by sliding around in the seat especially during driving. I use the spray, usually only when I notice that I am getting shocked again, and it seems to work for me.

Right on BSF, Lariat here w/ Leather. No static shocks getting out here. Can get one returning to the truck depending on surface you have been on. Downside however is them suckers are cold in this weather.

Maybe the rest of you are just more "electrifying"

Wink

Stop by your local computer supply house and get an aerosol can of anti-static spray used on carpets around computers. Spray your seat.
Enjoy...

Thanks to all of you! So far, I have taken the advice of touching the door frame (well, I touch the door "arm rest" part, too chicken to touch metal yet! LOL) and so far, no shocks!

I'll check around for the anti-static sprays. I have never heard of that!

Thanks again,
Claudia

Three to five years, shorter if you behave yourself!

Just kidding! There was a thread on this a while back in the general discussion area! I don't think we ever got a straight answer, but I think mine dropped off after 50 or so posts, I can'r remember the exact amount! So, as you see, some have it longer than others! I think some of these guys lost it the first day!

I have been having this same problem...I am going to have to try the holding on to the door trick.

If you really want to see the spark...exit your truck without touching the door. Take one of your keys (which has plastic on it)and touch it to the inside of the door. Many times, the key will never touch the metal and you will see a large blue bolt of electricity. If your fingers are touching the plastic part of the key, you will not feel it as bad.

I would not recommend using one of the new computer chip keys though..this might be harmful to the chip inside the key.

I used to get shocked all the time until I changed shoes. It may sound funny but give it a try. Sample different shoe types (soles) and see what you come up with.
