How hard is it to install a head unit on a Navigator/Expedition? this would be my first audio instal, but the guys at Car toys said it was pretty tough?

I wouldn't think it would be very hard at all. Isn't your radio/AC surround pretty similar to the F150? If so, even with no experience, you should be able to change your HU out in a couple of hours if you take your time. Make sure you get the necessary wiring adapters and you should have no problems at all.

I am getting a head unit for christmas. How do you get that front piece off that surrounds the cd player.

If your Navi/Expy is a 97-02, then installing a new head unit is actually very simple. All you need is the proper wiring harnes, dash board kit, and those little "U" shaped tools come in handy as well. The tools aren't needed however. I've used a modified hanger before. To get the piece that surrounds your HU off is actually pretty easy. All I do is grab it at the HVAC vents, and Pull. If you have an airbag that can be turned off (most likely you do) then all you have to do is unclip the plug and set the dash piece aside.

FYI - Be carefull when choosing a Dash Kit. I installed a stearo in my 97 F150 and te kit that the audio store gave me didn't fit cleanly. there were small gaps around the kit and the dash board piece.

Hope this helps. E-mail me if you need anything else.

This is the place to get the radio adaptor, and wire harness. Once you have these it is real easy.

Do it yourself, there are plenty of places to buy the dash mount kits. It is the easiest part of upgrading your system. Save your self the $$$$$$.
