CD Changer Compatibility ?

I just recently bought a 2001 SuperCrew Lariat. And it came with a Am/Fm Cass indash, with a changer in the center console. My question is this: If i decide to get rid of the head unit. Is the changer compatible with say Sony,Alpine,Pioneer or Kenwood etc.
I don't need the cass. player. And I would like to upgrade to XM.
Is there any way to keep the changer with out using a RF modulator kit etc. Has anyone done this?

Thanx

The changer is not compatible with any aftermarket HU that I'm aware of.

OK, here's a related question. I've got the 6disc console changer also, and my hu has a cassette player. If I were to replace my hu with another factory hu that has 6disc in the dash, will that hu control the changer also?

Good question. I'd confirm this with a few other people and not go solely on my word but, I think it will.

If the HU has a "CD" button on the face, it will control your changer. I'm sure at some point going back in year models that you will find one that will not work, but I'm not sure what year that would be. Stick with the later year models and you should be fine.

Lightbulb

A couple other things to consider before spending too much money on a stock system:

You can very easily sell your stock changer and HU and have enough money for a good quality aftermarket HU. Take the money you are thinking of spending on the stock in-dash CD player and put it on an aftermarket changer.

Good Luck!

You might want to give Crutchfield a call and see what they come up with. I've always found them to be very helpful and best of all, it's free!
