XM question...

Does anyone know if any of the XM units have RCA outputs? I have a non-XM Sony HU that has an aux. RCA input. Would one of the add-on XM units be compatible with this?

Thanks,
Sven

Could you be a little more specific?

I'm not sure I see what you're trying to accomplish.

Are you questioning if the XM recievers (the brain box) have RCA outs? An XM head unit with RCA out?

I'm fairly familar with XM and might be able to answer your question... just not sure what you're looking for or wanting to do.

Thanks.

My head unit is a pre-XM, but it has a set of RCA inputs. If possible, I would like to run an XM system through these inputs instead of using an FM modulator. I did some investigating, and found a few of the add-on units do have outputs that bypass the modulators and will do what I want.

Basically, I would have to get one of the kits that has the XM receiver and XM controller/FM modulator that has outputs that I can plug into my system.

Thanks,
Sven

RP,

While you're on the topic of XM, what is your impression of it? Is it worth it, or should we just stick with burning CD's and the regular radio?

Thanks,
Chris

If you're using the FM Modulator, you won't use the RCA jacks. The modulator sits in between the head unit and the antenna.

From what I understand, the Sony XM units have an analog line out using a mini jack (like walkman headphones, 1/8" I think.) You should be able to get a mini jack to RCA cable from most of the usual places (Radio Shack, maybe even Target/K-Mart/Walmart). It might even come with one of the Sony setup. It should work just like that, but I haven't sprung for XM, yet.

Bruce.

I don't think the RCAs will work by themselves. You're going to have to have some kind of external controller to scroll through channels and such with XM. The possibility exists that you may be able to get the signal from the XM brain box to the head unit with the RCAs though. Not sure if it will work or not...

I started with a modulator with XM and didn't have much trouble with it with the exception that it was somewhat clumsy. Thus, I upgraded head units so that I can control everything from there. I sincerely think you'd like it better if you had an XM ready head unit. Yeah, it's a little more money but, it's worth it in the long run IMO.

The verdict on XM....

I haven't listened to a CD, CDR, or FM since I purchased XM. I think that speaks for itself. I LOVE XM.

If your head unit has RCA InPuts you can use a Sony Plug-n-Play home unit.....it has RCA outputs. All you will need to buy is a 6v power cord (one for a Sony MP3 Player can be bought at any Electronics Store like Best Buy). The P-n-P car unit comes with the adapter but has a AUX output like mentioned above or a cassette adapter.....so make sure you get a HOME UNIT so it has the RCA outputs. If you use your RCA inputs/outputs it will work like an external reciever....volume and other audio controls are controlled through your headunit but the channels and song title will appear on the front of the Sony P-n-P. Its a very nice set up...thats the basic way I have it installed in my GFs Cougar. I took the ash tray out and put the Sony unit there and it looks very nice. I also installed one in a buddies Yukon very close to that...I put the unit in the little hole that hold CDs right above the console but he went with the casstte adapter....you just put it in your tape player and it works like playing a tape. On both installs instead of pluging the unit into the cig lighter I ran another power point behind the dash to plug it into (this way the unit can still be removed fairly quickly and moved to another car.)

As for XM being worth the money...DEFFINETLY!!! I have XM in all 3 of my cars and could not imagine being with out it....since XM I havent burnt or bought a single CD and FM radio is joke!

I don't frequent this board much but I do know allot about XM....if you have any specific questions email me at ramsst1997@hotmail.com.

Or you can visit this sight for lots of great info on both XM and Sirius... www.clubxm.com

Chris, same here. If you can't find something cool to listen to on XM, your not scanning fast enough. And by the time you get through scanning, everything has changed. After a month, my favorites are 40 and 41. I've heard stuff on Deep Tracks (40) and Boneyard (41) that i have'nt heard in over a decade and forgot all about.

But heres the catch, you'll hear stuff that you forgot about, and find and rip the CD. If it was'nt for XM, i would never rip the stuff because i forgot about it.
