Angry Distortion! Augh!

I have a Kenwood KDC-316s cd player in my truck. And after about 30-45 minutes of loud music, the volume lowers drastically and the sound starts to distort badly. What's up with that? Then when I turn it off awhile and then turn it back on, it plays fine. I also have infinity reference 5x7's in the door's with no amp. I'm thinking it could either be an overheating problem with the cd player, because the cd is red hot after I take it out. Or my speaker's are about to blow. And everything is wired up correctly. It's been doing this for a while, so if it where the speaker's, they would've blown by now. I dunno. I'm just guessing. Has anyone else had this problem?

It does sound like you have a heat problem. Most decks these days do run extremely hot. Your deck could have some sort of thermal protection circuit that instead of shutting off the unit simply drops its power output. You may also be overdriving the decks internal amp since it doesn't put out enough power to make the speakers loud enough.

I think your right Deus. And as long as I keep the volume at 20 or below, it does'nt overheat that bad. So like you said, the internal amp is pushing to hard and overheating when I crank it up, causing the speakers to distort due to a lack of power. I need to buy a pioneer unit that has the mosfet transistors in them. I heard they dissipate heat heat more efficiently so you get clean sound even at high temperatures. Or go the easy route and buy an amp.Do you know where to mount an amp for the door speakers?

You are best off going with an amp. You will have more power and less distortion plus less heat problems. You can mount an amp under the seats or behind them (in a reg cab). Most of the 'high power' decks are gimmicky. They do put out more power but it still isnt enough for a good listening experience.

I'd doubt it's the speakers. Those Infinity's can handle ~90 I think. BTW, what deck do you have? I'd agree with Deus. Go for the amp. The console is a good place to stick it.

It's a Kenwood KDC-316S. Last year's model. What kind of 2 channel amp would be good?

I just ordered an Infinity Basslink. It's a sub/amp combo. Space-saver, too. Given good reviews, both here and on Epinions.com. A buddy's mom works for Harman/Kardon so I'm getting a break. While not inexpensive, it's good quality.

Hoping to house it in the console, too. I've mined for a few in-console sub posts and still digging. Good luck.

Talking

I've heard about the Infinity Basslink. I think they run about 400 bucks if I'm not mistaken. Tell me how everything turns out with your sub. I might buy one too.

In my opinion you are better off not getting an all in one unit. A 4 channel amp and a subwoofer or two will be roughly the same price and vastly outperform the all in one unit.

True. I guess it really depends on your personal preference and setup. If going for true performance then separate units are the way to go. Myself, on the other hand, I'm not looking to go all out for sub compartments and/or housing mods. Space is my #1 issue. The Basslink will (probably/hopefully) fit under-seat or in-console. Good luck!

You may be able to help your problem by beefing up the wiring to your HU. If you are using the stock harness, it is a very small wire. Also, as you guys probably know, the radio is pretty much encapsulated with little to no airflow. It would help if you could somehow vent the radio pocket as well. I drilled a bunch of small holes in the back of mine(CD pocket above the radio) to get some more breathing room.

Good luck!

That's not a bad idea. When first removed my HU I was surprised to see how little wiggle room there was behind there. I wanted my RF modulator stowed behind the HU, and it was a real tight fit.

Oh, and like everyone else has said in other posts, do get the plug-in harness so you don't have to tap into the existing harness (or elsewhere).
