Look for an antenna tuned for the most common frequency that you will be receiving, for instance if the local PD is on 800 mHz then find one for that frequency. Any antenna will receive but an antenna that is resonant or tuned will work much better.

I'm using a hustler mag mount scanner antenna centered on the roof. Coax can be run in thru slider or between the doors. Cost is about US$26 shipped.

Check out pix in my gallery. I have Three mounted on an "Go Rhino" rack on the bed. All NMO mounts. One for UHF business band radio, another for dual cellular, and the center one is used for a scanner. It's actually an 800MHz phone antenna. Like another poster commented, any antenna will work for a scanner antenna, Most our Hwy Patrol runs 800MHz, so the phone antenna works ok and I had it anyways. On my Kenworth trucks I run NMO scanner antennas, they are more broad banded, so they work decent covering the whole spectrum.
