Three CB Radio Questions

I have always had CB radios in my trucks and I just recently got a 2009 F150 XLT SCAB 4X4 with a Leer Cap.

My first question is where would you recommend I mount the radio?

My second question is what kind of CB antenna would you recommend keeping in mind that I on occasion must use a parking garage with low clearance (which precludes the use of roof top mag mounts)?

Third question is where would you mount the CB antenna?

Thanks in advance!

I can't help with the first questions but on the other 2.....Normally I don't recommend the use of mag mounts but if you want both the ability to remove it on occasion and for it to work well, you don't have a lot of options. I'd recommend a Wilson 5000 mag mount

i dont have your answer exactly but I just got a Firestik ss-204a mount... I'm gonna be using it in my rear hatch of the expy but it has many adjustment options... maybe mount it under leer cap and run it up beside the bed...

1. Depends on whether or not you vehicle has the center console or not. If it does, then I recommend on the dash above the AM/FM radio. If it does not have a console, then mount it below the heater controls.

2. Wilson 5000, Wilson 1000, Firestick in that order. Make sure to get the antenna tuned (lowest SWR at channel 20 if possible).

3. Best location: center of cab roof with a magnetic mount (Wilson Lil Wil is great magnetic mount), otherwise a gutter mount over the door or a mount that uses a fender bolt and comes out of the hood/fender on the drivers side. DO NOT place the antenna on the bedrail near the cab, like I have seen many do. Also, DO NOT use co-phase antennas on a pickup.

Good website for CB accesssories: www.walcottcb.com

Look around at CB mounting systems, antenna mounting systems, etc. on that website.

Here is a picture of my truck...

I used a swivel/ball mount so I could mount it anywhere I wanted. This can be bought at radio shack for about $20. I have mine turned to 90˚ but I could easily have it pointed straight up and I use a spring on top of that to save whatever antenna I'm running. The antenna I have on it is a $20 antenna from radio shack that I cut with a hack saw so it could fit into parking garages. This one can reach a good 5 miles (not far but not bad). The other antenna I have is a 4-5 foot heavy duty bullwhip that I keep in my tool box. That one can easily reach 7 miles but I've never tested the full range for it.

One day I was in a hurry and took my truck into a parking garage with the tall metal antenna. The antenna gutted the parking garage until the ball mount slipped and laid the antenna down. Once I was done with what I needed to do I drove out, lifted the antenna up and tightened the mount back down and havent had an issue yet.

Oh and I have the Cobra 19 ultra II or III (cant remember, $40 at walmart)

My system may not be the fanciest around but it works just fine for me.

Icom doesn't make a cb radio.....most people on here aren't going to spend $700-$1000 for a 10 meter icom to beat up in their pickup

Again....Icom does NOT make a CB radio. They make amateur radios, marine radios, and commercial radios, but NO CBs. The ones you saw were marine radios and are illegal to use on land.

Using a Wilson 5000 mag mount on mine. Definitely won't fit in a garage, but it will tip over when you pull in real real slow. You can also unscrew the mast which is a PITA.I usually just tip it over & lay it on its side in parking garages. Even the Lil Will will not clear most garages.
There are some mounts that can be used on a Supercab & attach to the door hinge. They are about $18 for the mount & another $20-30 for a 3ft firestick or similar antenna. Also there are mounts that attach to the hood hinge area.

Do they still make an AM/FM/CB combo? I have one out in the garage that I used on my 93 F-150. The mounting will not work on a newer style though.
I got it at Radio Shack at the time.

I love the Wilson antennas. I'll post a pic of where I mounted my cb in my 2009. And on where to mount the antenna. I like to mount in the the bed rail in the center of the back window

k40 you can get a full size whip and then with a 1/4 turn the antennae comes off the base and you are good to go into garages.
